If we colonize MARS, what about the internet?

Well if we colonised another planet, the connection speed from that planet to the internet on Earth would be too slow to be available to anyone.

So, would there be a separate internet created for that planet?

And they would not be interlinked... if we had like three planets going...

I've been wondering the same thing myself. I think there will be two internets that mirror each other and then update every few hours. Stuff like ICQ will still work but boy, it will be pretty slow.

Yeah but this wouldn't work in the long run, if internet still existed and we had colonised some 5 planets... meaning it could take up to 24 hours for the Earthnet to filter all the way to the outer planets.

Maybe the ENTIRE internet could be hosted on a centeral space station type thing, with a satelite cache on each planet..

Why am I talking about this?

I want a job on this internet space station. Ivanov 1 .

We came pretty far pretty fast. We went from Kerosene lamps to transistor radios to gene therapy in under 100 years. I think we are probably connected already.

No doubt about it, alien technology is the reason we are where we are today. You can't tell me that Spandex just came out of nowhere.

Wireless digital satellite network uplink to Mars is the answer.

A nice OC-12 should do it.

Well that won't do it.

I bet people will go through being happy about speeds of like 6 bits per second

Then the craze when it goes up to like 120 and so on

Trust me, you are not the first one, but good luck.

You have no idea how far along all this is already, at least, from my minute knowledge .

how do you mirror internet?

webservers maybe would mirror themselves, but this has nothing to do with the internet itself.
only thing that can be done is 1 or more backbone inter-planetory connections, thats all. then everyone with web servers can either copy their stuff there to prevent lag or not, its just up to them.
bandwidth will not be an issue but the ping time will be way too high. instant messages wont be that instant, but still at the lightspeed it wont take that long for data packets to travel between the planets.

Hmm, you could be right. Let's see here...

OC-12 ---- 622.08 Mbps.

If there are going to be millions of users on Mars then we may have to go with something a little bigger,

like OC-768 --- 40 Gbps. NOW we're fuggin talkin.

The digital wireless link between the two planets shouldn't offer too much lag time. How fast do digital signals travel? And of course Mars could have it's own self-contained internet. If I send someone an email on Mars, why would I care if it takes 6 hours to get there?

Wait, didn't Mars have the internet before Earth?

Well, I know that you can transmit sound over a beam of light, Why wouldn't you be able to transmit Data over a beam of light?
Sunlight takes what was it, 6-8 seconds (or was it minutes) to get to earth from where it is, and the sun is much further from the earth than mars. In theory (assuming it is possible) The only thing that would really be damaged by the distance is connection time, once the connection was made it "could" be just as fast. But also, there would be a small light dissipation caused by the deflecting of the light from the far side of mars via satellite, which would probably cause some data loss.

Computing was inspired by a man who had a vision.
Forgot the name of the dude but basically he describes his inspiration for computer calculation as though he was being fed the information in his head.

True story. I will try and find it.
