Tuesday August 12, 4:58 pm ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - General Media Inc., a subsidiary of Penthouse International Inc. (OTC BB:PHSL.OB - News) and the publisher of the racy adult magazine Penthouse, on Tuesday said it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection so it can restructure its operations and debt.

General Media said it made the filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York. It has closed on a $5 million debtor-in-possession line of credit from some of its secured bondholders.

Haven't bought Penthouse in years, but if it is the last issue in August as you say I'll have to get it. The last issue is what I can show my grandkids in the future and tell them how we put this magazine out of business.

*wipes tear* Penthouse was the first adult magazine I ever saw, back in the 5th grade... I still have a few pages of it left in my dresser somewhere, lol.

I run the internet side of Penthouse. I started a thread a couple of hours ago which addresses this issue.

Penthouse is not going away. Bankruptcy is not the same as going out of business. We are not standing on the corner of 32nd and 7th selling Earl miller slides.

There will be new issues of Penthouse each month, we are still making videos, and generating good money on the internet.

So, when's the August issue supposed to hit the newsstands?

I've fond memories of Penthouse. Back before they've decided to publish peeing and penetration shots, they've routinely published the hottest girl-girl sets. However, they've also proven the old-wives' tale of going blind from masturbation to be true due to the excessive soft-focus used in their pictures.

They still have their assets...

I'm sure there's people who recognize that the Penthouse name has value, and will attempt to buy the trademark rights and the company's photo archive (I'm assuming here that Penthouse owns a good portion of their photography).

Distribution of the magazine will be one of their biggest challenges as they didnt publish some issues and their wholesalers were likely very unhappy with that. Once your lose your spot on the newsstand, getting it back is not easy. Many of the distributors will likely opt to put a title that they feel will sell and be reliably produced rather than titles who they are not sure are even going to press this month.

One thing is for certain, the Penthouse mark is extremely valuable and would survive any financial upheaval intact and marketable.
