Hotmail was purchased by Microsoft and the people that developed it had it on a Unix machine.... Microsoft has tried moving the network but it was too much of a pain.

They decided to keep it on UNIX boxes

        It's very correct.

Hotmail was not intiially a microsoft company, it was bought out
        by them.

Microsoft has tried, unsuccessfully and to the STRONG aggravation of the higher ups, three times to switch the hotmail infrastructure to windows. Every time has been a complete disaster. Windows cannot handle 1/10th the load that FreeBSD can. The hotmail BSD servers are extremely well setup..

I've got a couple of friends who are admins & programmers there, they're very badass.

          I Knew it!
Damed MS, cant even handle themselves...

Well, didnt see the two inputs above.

          Wonder about the license then...

This is a funny story. In some way.

Yep, HotMail is living testament -- and permanent thorn in Gate's side -- of MS's limitations and inadequacies of handling large loads.

I think they're on FreeBSD (or some other BSD variant) running QMail, at least for their incoming SMTP servers.

wow. this thread made my day!!!!!!
SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR.
Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.
Let me repeat... A 120 x 60 button and no more that 3 lines of DEFAULT SIZE AND COLOR text.

Freebsd + Qmail + Apache, though for a while they were actually running Aol's webserver..

Aol & Hotmail were really the first two major adopters of Qmail.

Qmail rocks. 6 years, not a single security problem!

                    SEndmail is for turds.

I laugh because I was in the datacenter in sunnyvale the night Microsoft first tried to move to Windows.. There were a bunch of laughing, stressed out unix geeks from hotmail, and then there were the microsoft crew.. ALL of them wearing white microsoft polo shits with a look of death on their face..

I heard they all got fired that week, and were apparently some of microsoft's best infrastructure guys.

My favorite tidbits are that the 2 largest databases on the web are both running off of linux clusters :
