I thought somebody would have posted something about the death of Herb Brooks, guess not. Maybe most GFYers were too young in 1980 to fully appreciate the Miracle on Ice. Herb Brooks was the man who put the 1980 U.S. Hockey team together for Lake Placid.

NO greater upset will ever occur in the history of sports - the Soviet national team was as good or better than the best the NHL had to offer. The U.S. hockey team were college kids, nobodies and it was truly a miracle on ice when they won the gold in Lake Placid. I'll never forget watching it, it was an amazing thing.

RIP Herb Brooks.

I am an aussie and was 15 then, I can still remember those words; It was an inspiration and a wonderful sports story.

You're talking about something that occured during the cold war, not to mention the fact that the Russians were so fucking unbeatable on many occassions before.

And if the situation had been reversed....yes people would have cared...especially in the former USSR.

it would be the same legend in Russia if the situation was reversed. Ask a Russian if they remember the 1972 Summit Series between the Canadians and the Soviet Union - it was the first time the Soviets ever played the best in the world and everybody thought the scores would be 10-0 Canada in each game. It turned out to be a nightmare for Canada, a humiliating embarassment as the Soviets playing with equipment that was a joke took it to the Canadians and made them look silly. The Canadians rebounded and won the series in the closing seconds of the 8th and final game.

Russians remember that series the same way Americans remember Lake Placid.

i will concede that Americans have a gift for hyperbole because of the huge media and entertainment machine that dominates the culture and things get blown up to mythical proportions.

And I've talked to a Russian webmaster, Dmitri who owns FerroCash(best niche hosiery program on the Internet btw) about the 1972 series. He knows all about it despite being too young to have experience it himself.
Why do you think the Soviets put so much money and resources into their sports teams - because it mattered so much to them, it was a way to demonstrate that their system was superior to ours.
