relative to what you make, how much do you spend?
as a baseline, let's say you're making 250K/year (after taxes). what percentage of your after tax earnings do you think is appropriate to spend on your lifestyle?
i had a very interesting talk yesterday with someone from gfy, and was blown away by his thoughts on savings/investment vs spending... lets' hear it :)

I spend nothing. I always thought my family was Catholic, but there's just got to be some Jew in me somewhere.

250k a year, the first year I would say 50% to 75% spent wouldn't sound too crazy. (Depending on what you spent it on) After that though maybe 25% to 30% a year with some of the extra going to investments but most in the bank.

Relatively little. Once you have a house and car (the large life expenses) that you like and in a location that you enjoy, there really aren't many other places to spend so much money. Only on things like vacations and extra toys, but even those shouldn't bite into the savings too much. This is assuming you live comfortably but not extravagantly (ex. you don't need the latest car or new house every month type of lifestyle)

Interesting thread... Well, I'm under 500k a yr and my mthly expenses are $6,200. I've got a house car and a few toys but I plan on saving alot more.
If you're making 250k per yr, that's around 20k per mth. You should be able to bank at least 6k per mth after expenses. |

Just don't try to start a new life in your late 30's and you should get along well. lol Banks don't like old divorced folks wanting to buy a house or anything like that.
Even when you can afford it!

I'm managing to live on about 25% of my income...All the rest is invested.
These days I hardly make any wasteful expenditures. However if I was 18 and making this money god knows what I would be spending. |

<10% here. I remember being poor, still feel guilty spending money.
oh and plus my biggest fear is having to work for 'the man'... saving gives piece of mind.

I'm guessing most of you people don't have kids.
I don't live extravigantly at all. My car is 3 years old, and just a nice SUV, nothing special. The house is very nice but not a mansion. I have a couple toys, but nothing wildly expensive. My mortgage is 3K, health insurance 1100 a month, groceries you wouldn't fucking believe it. My daughters college tuition is 14K (cheap by todays standards) and 2 more kids in school. By the time the month goes by, its easy to blow by 20K without even realizing it. I'm lucky most years just to be able to fund my 401K to the maximum, 26K or whaetver it was last year, I forgot. What lifestyle? On the other hand, when I was 24 (24 years ago) I was making 150K, a wildly obscene amount of money at the time for a single guy. I would say I managed to spend about 110% of my income back then, worldwide trips, girlfriends, aircraft charter, parties, etc. So it all depends on age. When I was young I blew all of it; when I got 30 I started investing and saving, around 10% per year. Those years when I spent 110% - I have no regrets. |

Since I'm a pessimist, I've always spent everything, plus. Red ink city for me! Investments are for those wearing rosy-tinted glasses that actually believe there's a future in these end times. My motto is:
"Go for broke, die in debt and let the fools try to collect". (But that's really only because I failed to die young and leave a good-looking corpse, which was a much earlier motto of mine.)

I use about 30-40% and the rest is banked and put in real estate (one object being a holiday house, so I can enjoy my investment immediately ;-)
However, I am at a level where I say I can live comfortably (but not extravagant). If my company would make an extra $50k, or $50k less, I would not change my own salary. I think I would start to make changes to this lifestyle if I start to use more than 80% of what I make. And if my earnings increase so much that this lifestyle is less than 10% of what I make I might get myself some new toys ;-) |

Been making more and more every month and with that been spending more and more. Luckily in the past few months I have purchased some real estate and started to get some of my priorities in line.

Sheesh, look at all these wise opinions, but in all honesty, ya have to get a little stupid with the money, and then get real because this income is short term for many, and cannot sustain ones lifestyle for the rest of your life.

I think it's hard to answer a question like that, without seeing the whole situation. It depends on the cost of living where you live, property values, social security system for retirement, how old you are, how much you have saved already.

A couple months of 14k monthly spending money wouldn't be hard, but much more than a couple months and I'd be lost. I live pretty simple, only costly thing I'm really interested in is traveling.
