Son of Former S. Korean Leader Sentenced

SEOUL, South Korea - An appeals court sentenced the youngest son of former President Kim Dae-jung (news - web sites) to a 1 1/2-year suspended prison term Tuesday for receiving bribes from businessmen and fined him $133,000.



Kim Hong-gul, 39, received a two-year suspended prison term in a lower court verdict in November. He was convicted of taking about $2.8 million in bribes in an influence-peddling scandal. The court ruling denounced him for "infuriating the people" with his unethical behavior, but said it gave a lenient punishment because of evidence that he was used by friends in the scandal.


He is the second son of the former president to be convicted.


In May, the Supreme Court upheld a two-year jail term for another son, Hong-up, 53, who was also convicted of taking bribes from businessmen.


While the ex-president has not been implicated in any wrongdoing, he has apologized repeatedly for the behavior of his sons while in office. The ex-president's five-year term ended in February.
