One letter domains. You can't register them?

Lol, never tried it, but I saw you couldn't register a.com or b.com because it gives back BAD syntax.

www.a.com
www.b.com

nothing work BUT

www.x.com works(and leads to paypal)

How is that possible?

Andre

i know that with godaddy you actually have to look up who owns an ordinary domain before you can look at the single letter or even 2 letter domains.

x.com was originally an online bank that's obviously now defunct

I remember when that happened, I wondered who came up with a gay name like "PayPal".

One-letter domains were allowed, once in ancient times. They have since been disallowed, but the ones that still existed were "grandfathered".

actually this is a good question. In 1993 Jon Postel registered most of the single letter domains and dedicated them to the public domain. Only 4 of the domains were already registered out of 144~ he registered.

x.com was one of those all ready registered. and was grandfathered in which is which is why paypal is using it.

Read this link. The first part of it should answer your question.

x.com was a bank. I used them. When they closed I had less than THREE WEEKS WARNING to close my account and find a new bank. I was PISSED.
