besides. taking the bible through a literal translation doesn't work anyways. the bible is more like aesops fables. its a collection of stories designed to give you moral guidance. the ten commandments are basically common sense things, i think. but there are too many 'what if' scenario's to try to directly interpret the bible as some sort of law.

i don't believe neccisarily that religion is shit. organized religion has been perverted by decietful human minds to allow for power over people. but there's alot to be said for having a sense of spirituality i think. and trying to understand that there are bigger things out there than just this tiny rock we live on.

ferget about christianity. there are things that go far deeper and with far less bullshit. like i said the entirety of most modern religion is polluted by the minds of men. greedy, evil, ignorant men. many people percieve this as being the fault of the religion, but it is not. all religions basically have the same ideals when you boil it down, they just have different ways of relating it for different cultures. taking stories from the bible at face value doesn't make sense i agree. but look for the symbolism in the stories.

Actually, it really is not pathetic. It's a very good guide, for pre-technological cultures, as to what is and is not a good idea - mostly healthwise. And a lot of stuff we now consider either common sense or simple morality.

So think of it this way. You have a small faction of learned and otherwise intellegent people who understand that certain animals are not a good idea for the dinner table; who understand that certain bodily fluids are hotbeds for disease, etc... And you have a huge, uneducated, and relatively primative populace. You don't just tell them, "Read this book, you need to know this stuff if our species is going to survive." In some ways, the primitive Bible was the Internet of its time...

As I understand it - and gawd knows I'm no Bible scholar (but my Dad is one, as were many of the people at my Church Camp, lol) the best literal translation of this commandment is "Thou shall not MURDER", which most court systems agree is a very different thing.

The Bible encourages capital punishment. Check out Leviticus. There are many statements in which someone should be stoned to death for their crimes.

Very true. The commandment was not applied to war for example, which the ancient Israelites seemed decent enough at (in a very limited region) - at least according to the Biblical telling.
