The core problem is Muslims detest the western style cultures of Jews and America.

There are 1.3 Billion Muslims in the world now and I don't see a solution on the horizon anytime soon since we detest their ways also.

Correct, they are the ones running around driving themselves crazy and we just sit back and watch. Malaysians espesially are a very racist country, I used to go to Malaysia every year with my sport, (along with many other asian countries) and was always confronted with racism towords me from the locals. They just plain don't like us westerners at all.

If you read the entire article, even right-wing CNN empathizes with Mahathir a little by the bottom of the page. He is not encouraging or even endorsing violence; he is condemning it. He is faced with bringing a rational message to 1.3 billion people who have been taught by irrational interpretations of a religious book. Sound familiar?

If Mahathir was to support the Western world and Israel, he would succeed in nothing but "betraying" Muslims and breeding terrorism against him in his own country. Understand, thousands of years of extreme teaching and beliefs do not end with a political leader signing his name on a fucking piece of paper. If you take a person with limited education, and try to strip and remove from them the only thing they know, they will react accordingly. Islam stands for so much more than terrorism...it is the foundation of the Muslim society...why don't we get pissed off when the G8 meets and decides which countries pose as economic obstacles?

If you listen to Mahathir in context, his comments are not extreme. He is simply saying that it is important for all Muslims to stand behind each other, not neccessarily because Islam is the way to God, but because Islam stitches together the fabrics of 50 countries and 1.3 billion people. His comments are not a condemnation of Jews (I am Jewish, BTW) for becoming world leaders...he is outraged that his own religion, his own people, are disrespected on a global scale because of extreme actions based on extreme teachings by extreme religious leaders.

Mahathir is saying something to every young Muslim person in the world:

There are 1.3 billion people who see the Western world as a direct threat to their very existence. Whether that is a legitimate belief or not is for another thread...I don't want to go there. The fact is, they believe that they are being persecuted. Right now, their only defence against that persecution is suicide bombing and the occasional homemade rocket launcher which has as much of a chance at hitting it's target as Pedro in the 8th inning. (I wanted the BoSox to win...it was Grady's fault) Mahathir is saying that if they want to defend themselves, if that is really what they want to focus on as a people, then they are going about it the absolute wrong way. They are paying for instruments of war to defend their religion that prevents the manufacturing of instruments of war...they are living an oxymoron and it is a dead end road. Those countries need weapons because in this world in 2003, there are still military threats against sovereign nations and it would be ludicrous and plain stupid to not have defense mechanisms. If Bush IS after oil and money, and again, I am not taking a stand one way or the other in here, then the only way to protect the natural resources of the Middle East and ensure economic stability in the future is to defend your land with your blood.

Detractors are those who take away anything from anyone...in this case land, resources, way of life, etc... Enemies are those who detract by military force. It is as simple as that. I have debated time and time again with my father how wrong it was for them to imprison japanes during world war 2...however I can see now with the heightened paranoia how something like this could easily happen again.

I just think things get blown out of proportion...if the media's first reaction to this was to say, "Malaysian Prime Minister attacks Islamic religious leaders at summit" and went on to say that he believes that education is the answer to peace, not fanaticism (is that a word?) we would all have a different view on this......it is very hard to avoid subjective media.
