It depends on how you get your traffic. If you work search engines you gotta have it, the more the better, and you get it by getting links from other sites to your site. (basicly) The more PR you have the higher you will rank, all other things being equal. (But not everything is equal, and that lets you wiggle a bit if you know the quirks of the system.)
If you work TGP, CJ, etc, you don't need it and google won't give it to ya.
