Restricting Access to Software on Windows?

I want to restrict access on my office computers so emplyees can only use one or two software on their coputers. Windos98. How do I do this? I want to block everything like Internet Explorer etc and block them from making changes to any files except the software they work on and outlook express to check and send mails. Is this possible?

Yes, they're called system policies.

However, Win98 is about as secure as a screen door. Get a decent operating system made this century first.

That is not possible with Win98.. You will need a secured file system such as NTFS to do that.

So how would I go about getting it done?

I assume first I would have to get Win XP? Or WindowsNT? Which?

The software the employees use are simple packages like Export, along with outlook express. Nothing else. The computers are all networked.

Can they (WinXP or 2KPro) block all programs like Internet Explorer, changing desktop, normal Windows Explorer, winamp etc?

I would like users to be able to access only a couple of software - Outlook express to answer mails and one more.

They must not be able to change settings on Outlook Express, only read, receive and send mails.

You will need either W2k or XP as said above..

Then you have to format your disk with NTFS & set a password for your users.

Then you can restrict them to reach certain places or programs.

In XP you will also get encryption at folder lever..not just protection..

Thanks.

The computer users at the office arent very technical people, so I dont really need very heavy security. I assume there's no other simpler way I could simply stop them (or make it difficult for a layperson) to access other software?

Else I'll just get XPPro installed on all the computers.

I agree, the more the lock them them down the worse it is. Let them be. If they fuck around too much, they shouldn't be working for you anyways.

Someone downloaded something from the net that got a virus on the entire network and has technicians reinstalling everything and stopped work for 4 days. There was Norton antivirus installed. I need to stop that kind of stuff.

There must be a way to stop it or at least control it without being a dickhead about it. Stuff like this creates a hostile work environment. If you can't trust them, fire them. Just don't treat them like 3 year olds. If I came into work and saw that, I'd pack up my shit and walk out.
