How would you build a good system for video editing?
What cpu speed would be best, hard drive speed and size, video card, ram etc...

Try a Final Cut Pro system. That's what I have.

You can get yourself an eMac for under $1000. That's got a G4 processor, and depending on where you order, you can get RAM for cheap.

As far as RAM, I have 640 MB and have no problems. The machine runs on 667 MHz, and that too goes off without a hitch.

Internal Hard Drive is 40 GB, but you can buy 120 GB firewire hard drives for under $250. That should more than cover you.

Software is another issue. FCP retails for $999, but it's worth the investment. You should also look into Media Cleaner to encode your clips.

Then there's the DV deck, which should run you about $800 or so. All in all, about a $3000-$3500 investment to do what you need.

Well it depends on how much you need edited. I charge less per video if the quantity of video is high (if you need 10 tapes as opposed to 1).

On average, I charge about $100 to edit and encode, but that's not the actual quote. I need more info from you (quantity, what you exactly need, etc.) Then I can give you a more realistic rate.
