Your thoughts on ISDN?

Your thoughts on ISDN?

Heres the deal folks.
I'm on 56k dail up which at least connects at 49k.

I can't get DSL where I live. I'm about a half a mile to far from the TECO here. Yeah sucks.

I could get cable internet access but the cable out here sucks and is out 1 or 2 days aweek. So I'll have to pass on that too.

I just now found out I can get ISDN for a very good price. And at min would be connecting at 128k or higher using 2 channel and still be able to get phone calls.

So what does everyone think about ISDN?
I can get it for about the same price as I'm paying for my present ISP.

Give me some input on this if you would.
Good stuff, bad stuff?

Thanks in advance
Oz

I know a dude who was on the original team of inventors for this ISDN chip.

And he never used it himself.

Your choice.

Are from OZ Oz?

I had ISDN for a while. Here's it's like 2xB channels (128k) and on the 'capped' plan was costing me about $450 a month!

ISDN is usually pretty damn expensive, that is the primary (only) reason DSL was made available in the first place.

I can't get cable or DSL where I am (SUCKS) and have 2 dual channel ISDN modems. One thing I don't think you are looking at is the ISDN lines with the phone company. I pay aroung $35 per month to the phone company (and it cost $200 each to have them installed) PLUS having to pay the ISP's $39.95 for each. Added together it's about $75 per dual channel ISDN line, and I have two so that's $150 per month (OUCH). Wish I could get cable/DSL. As for speed, I clocked it when I first got it and it was around 4 times faster than a 56k dialup, dialup is analog and ISDN is digital. I have had them for 1 1/2 years and would not go back to dialup. Just my

5 years ago I was selling ISDN connections to local business here. Back then, a 2b channel was around $500 per month, but the cable modem wasn't available yet and the great appeal of the ISDN was that with compression you could get up to 512kb/s, and it was actually dedicated.

If you can get it now for the same price as your existing slower service, and there is no better alternative where you live, I would go for it if I were you. But before you do, you may want to look into the availability of satellite bandwidth as well. There are companies out there that are springing up all over now that can drop digital bandwidth down to you for a decent price too.

I'm seriously considering either ISDN or some kind of point to point radio link. I might be able to get a roadrunner cable modem next month, but thats what they have been telling me all summer long. I am on dial up now and it sucks bad.

I had a good experience with ISDN. Had it for about a year before DSL and cable were available in my area. The price was very reasonable, about $15 less than my cable modem now. If you can get a good price, I think it is worth it. While the download speed isn't huge, I noticed that the latency was quite good - better than the DSL I used for a while. Good luck.

Same price no problem as long as the server isnt overloaded you wont have a problem. Sounds like you may live in whoop whoop so 128 does sound your best bet.

I'm about a half a mile to far from the Telco for it to work. They will only let someone subscribe if they are in range.

Swoit
No I'm not from Ozzyland. I'm in Texas.

NexTGP and lock
I can get 2 channel 128k for $20 a month which is a 3rd cheaper then the ISP I use right now.
The router is around $100 so that's not to bad.

The hold up price wise would be the TELCO running the new digital lines. And I'm asuming that I don't have digi line and will have to have them installed. I'm checking on the prices.

Baddog
Right, the way I understand it is that ISDN is more stable and gives better service then any DSL. The reason everyone goes with DSL is that it WAS much cheaper then ISDN. Which doesn't look to be true any more. So Telco pushed DSL to the budget minded and pushed ISDN to business's since ISDN was the higher priced spread.
