I guess it is federal regulation that your whois info is true and correct. That is why they are so anal about it.

I have heard it's possible there are people submitting 1000's of "domain info is fake" forms just hoping to pick up the names if someone deletes them - even if they don't know if the info is fake.

They should find out who's submitting those fucking requests and fuck them. The form submit system was not meant to be a place where some idiot runs a script submitting every name in the whole WHOIS that he wants to steal.

Does anyone think this has something to do with the new federal 2257 task force?
They've got 25 federal prosecutors doing nothing but going after obscenity and 2257 violations.....they need accurate whois info to go and arrest the people who own the domains....so I think they're cracking down on domain registrars now so they can come after us later.

Better have your docs in order boys and girls, 2003 will be one hell of a ride.

I don't think so. I believe it has to do with people who want the domains. It's been going on for a while, but it's been said that they are starting to bulk submit reports on domains, hoping that some of the domains will drop so they can register them.

This is nothing new, it's just getting more popular with domain grabbers because they realize it's an easy way to make a domain drop. They need to screen out any people making 100's of submissions a day to the report form.

I might also add that people will probably target DirectNic or any registrar if that registrar starts deleting a bunch of domains rather than helping their customers resolve the problem, if a problem even exists.

Hopefully Directnic will find a way to deal with this so their customers don't become a target of repeated problem form submissions.

Using the correct info on a whois has been a "rule" for a long time. But only about a year ago, ICANN decided that they were tired of registrars not enforcing it. So they dropped the other shoe. Either enforce it or they will pull the registrars rights to sell etc. No doubts thieves are trying to use it to swipe domains as well.

I guess *my* question is, how many people lease houses, cars, get utilities or anything ELSE using whatever fake ID they want and How is leasing a domain ANY different than leasing a car... power tool etc etc.

Don't like the rules? Get out of the business.

This is not as simple as some of you seem to think. Wait until they target you and you have 15 days or whatever to try to convince someone you don't even know that you really aren't a scammer. It's guilty until proven innocent in some of these cases.

Sometimes they will report accurate info as fake and even if you respond, if they don't believe you, and the clock is ticking. Also, someone can just keep reporting it and if your registrar isn't helping you to deal with these issues, then eventually you may get fucked no matter what you do.

I've heard from people who have accurate WHOIS info who have had domains taken from them because they didn't update their info when they were sent a warning. Why didn't they update it? Because it was accurate.

We've been hit Mr.Fiction. I called them up from a different line and had them call me back on the Whois number and only one time was I asked to show the mailing address was correct. So I faxed them a copy of a utility bill with the PO and the problem went away. They do have ways to earmark domains as to having been verified info wise so if more complaints come in, they are usually 86'd.

Internic is also tightening down on the complaints too. Anyone who wants to know how to find out alot of the rules- problems etc currently being dealt with can go to the ARIN site and sign up to get emails where the committee is discussing how to deal with the problems and then they forward it to ICANN once they have viable fixes.

Sasha and to everybody else, the invalid WHOIS stuff is something that is an ICANN for all domain registrars. Anybody can send in an invalid WHOIS complaint to ICANN at http://reports.internic.net/cgi/rpt_whois/rpt.cgi. They attempt to verify if the information is valid or not, and if it's not they then send an email to the domain registrar. The domain registrar then has 15 days to get the information corrected and report it back to ICANN or delete the domain name.

I do know that people have submitted domains to ICANN that they want to pick up themselves, so it's all a big game. That is one of the reasons, that when we receive a report of invalid WHOIS from ICANN we give the customer 15 days to update the information. If they do not update the information within 15 days, we don't delete the domain. We move the domain to another account and set the domain to not resolve.

Sure, you may lose some traffic, but at least you don't lose the domain as with other domain registrars.

Why do we need valid contact details, I don't want a member of my family answering the phone and getting asked if they are the owner of the domain wide-open-anal-passages.com or something lol

Sasha - Send me an email to [email protected] with the domain you are having problems with. I've already corrected 3 today, a few more won't hurt.
