Video Gurus - what is best compression software?

What is the best software for compressing MPEG files into WMV, Real and Quicktime formats?

We've been having trouble shrinking the file size of our tour and TGP video clips without making them look like shit.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.

I'd recommend Windows Media Encoder 9.

Set your video quality to VHS and set your sound to mono. Seems to be the best compression and quality IMHO.

WMV ver. 9 is very nice, but we found it's not compatibale with older Windows Media Players.

We are currently encoding our Windows format videos in WMV ver. 8 format because it is compatible with more computers currently on the Web.

My webmaster is using Cleaner 5 now. He says it "works all right."

But I'm wondering if somebody out there has a "secret weapon" that we have not heard about that does a great job of crunching video files down without sacrificing too much video quality.

cleaner is solid and xl finally makes use of dual processors (for pc's), also the way you can queue up jobs and watch folders is fucking sick

Sorenson Squeeze works well and also makes MPEG4

If it was a "secret weapon" then disclosing it would make it not so much a secret anymore ;)

Capture and edit with Pinnicale or Premiere and then run it through Discreet Media Cleaner

Its a shame about windows media 9 because you can make the clips small and the quality is very high but most dont use it. It also goes to show most people are still on old boxes.

Vegas Video 4.0 hands down.
