Significant Other

how many webmasters work with a significant other?

do you think it's better to be involved with another person who is in the biz or would you rather be involved with someone outside the biz?

I have. Its ok for a while but you can run into power sharing issues. Plus I think its important for each to have their own thing so you always have things to talk about at the end of the day.

I got started making an amateur site for my girlfriend. We've been together for almost 4 years now, and she still stars on my most popular site.

good deal. however, dont take this personally either, if she were to stop making you money (content for your site), would you stay with her?

My girlfriend is a web designer, but does "legitimate" things. She has done some design for me though and helped me with Photoshop and shit like that. It works out well. She doesn't want to do any adult stuff for herself, but she helps me out when I need it.

I used to be SO PROUD of myself for not having a boyfriend tampering with my site.

But now I am a lot happier having my "houseboy" to work with. He doesn't code or anything (yet) but takes pics, edits videos, etc. And I love exploiting him on his site hehehe.

It probably just depends on the chemistry of the couple -- for us I think it works out well. It would be hard for me to be involved with someone who didn't want to be involved in this industry. I don't care what other people think about keeping business and pleasure in separate quadrants of your life. Life is more rewarding when business and pleasure are combined -- having an emotional partnership AND a work partnership is twice as exciting!! Sure, there are probably more risks involved but there are also more opportunities for growth (business-wise too) and intimacy.

Partners who work in the same field have more in common -- that is indisputable. If the chemistry is right and power isn't an issue then what could possibly be better?

My wife has her own job but works 2 days a week for me, packing videos, duplicating dvds, or shooting footage with a backup camera, whatever.

We've been married for almost 20 years and I think it works to be involved in each other's affairs, at least somewhat, but also to have some separate interests and friends so you aren't in each other's face 24X7.

Used to work by myself. But now my girlfriend is working with me. Both in our design company and in all adult things we make.
But she is not on any of our sites.

Its killed nearly every relationship I have had since I started.

And if it didnt kill it, it was a major issue.

I in no way want to be with someone who works in this business, unless she has sick amounts of traffic and makes an absurd amount of money. But alas, if you choose to be with a "normal" woman, its hard explaining that just because you look at gay porn all day that you are not harboring some deep seeded cock love.

It ALWAYS becomes an issue.

Good god, yes. I will try not to be insulted-- I will just say I am not that kind of guy. Our relationship comes first. Anyone who would do otherwise is sick.

Tev and I have worked together for five years now...although, we both have separate interests within the industry now.

For the first three years, we shared an office...which worked, but eventually got annoying enough....that we are now in separate offices...

I talk to my computer and he curses at his....very distracting.

We've never had power struggles within the marriage and that's carried over into the business end of things.

It helps to be best friends and have the same goals, I think.

We'll be married eight years next week.

Any happily married co-workers care to share their tips for success?

I've tried to recruit my boyfriend to help out with time consuming tasks like building doorways or submitting to toplists for me, but it ends up being just one more thing to nag him about. On top of, "You said you were going to do the dishes today!", there's now, "Did you finish project X yet?".

The one thing that works well for us is me building AVS sites & then letting him promote them. It only takes me a couple of hours so I don't really care how much or how little effort he puts into them. Plus the checks go to him so this might be a good way for him to learn the industry (quasi) on his own.

Still...getting to work from home together rocks.

For us, we have a division of labour....I do the words. He builds the sites. I critique them. He fixes.

I run Sin-text and Cozy Campus.

He works for a sponsor. We sit down every morning and plan things, both for the now and for the future. We don't always agree; but, that's healthy because we debate it or piss about it and then we come to some kind of agreement and continue.

Having separate areas of expertise helps because there's no pissing contests....and separate offices is awesome.

It also helps that Tev is very easy going; whereas I'm volatile and impatient. It's a good match. We are very good friends, besides being lovers...which I think is beneficial.....

It seems to me, it would be very difficult for someone in the biz to be with someone who isn't, because of the sheer hours spent online.....

good point! the hours are borderline unhealthy at times and not too many people would be patient with the amount of time devoted to this work.

I can understand why it wouldn't work for some but it works for us.

We each have our own sites and come together to work on our small paysite.

We share an office and find that we work better when we are both in there together. We've been in the industry for 5 years now and while we are gradually repositioning ourselves to have a slightly different focus we don't plan on changing anything.

I couldn't imagine working in any other way now.

And of course anytime one of us is feeling a bit randy the office floor has a nice carpet and we can have real fun
