Smashing Machine on HBO

Great Documantary on the life of skilled and mixed martial arts fighters.

The life in and out of the ring and the evolution of the sport in the last 8 years (in my opinion for the worse) is hell of an intresting movie.

My first time seeing it. I have a feeling its an old production but seeing it for the first time I thought it was pretty well done.

Gives a better look at the Japanese and the "Pride" Federation they have over there. Pride seems to remind me more of UFC back when it was good.

Yeah man I saw that almost a year back, it does talk a lot about "Pride" fighting. Pretty interesting and brutal look at the whole thing. I don't imagine it helps promote the sport though.

Pride had some good marketing and ideas.
Really fluffed up, lights camera action goin on.

The fighters on the mic, the lights, the hype, the fireworks.

The Japs were onto somethin here.

UFC should look into that direction.

Most people dont even realize UFC is around anymore but in Japan they all know what Pride is.

Japs arent all that bad afterall.

They love bukkake, and they have a Pride federation that has so much draw and attetnion it makes UFC look like a backyard wrestling.

Thumbs up to the Japs.

UFC would have been bigger but the fucking pussies in this county started banning it in all the states they tried to fight in and the pay per view companies wouldn't allow it to be shown in many markets because they said it was too violent and that's what killed them.

Hey you're in my area.

Come to the next Rumble at the Roseland and Ill introduce you to some fighters and you can tell em all about the movie with the "cry baby" "addict fighter".

In fact come to Ashland in August.
We have a fight down there August 16th I believe.

Boneprone family will represent.

Yeah they had to.
It was just too fucking brutal. It was even hard for me to watch the kneeing to the head- face when the opponent was down and the elbowing and headbutting when down. It was cool, but you can kinda understand why. The crackling bones of skull caving in was a bit much. (yet cool!)

It would be difficult to watch my family members getting thier faces kneeed in during one of these things, but I agree since going less brutal the ratings went down. Also you see a lot of the all out brawlers being pushed out of the biz more and more and the ring "technicians" or more technical fighters are doing well and rising to the top with the change of rules.

Even in this movie it showed how the old champ guy struggled with the rule changes. Went into a slump as the more technical fighters rose to the top and the all out brawlers who failed to evolve sunk.

It was cool to see the old guy in the movie who was considered "washed up" since the new rules limited his skills adapt to the new rules several years later to win the championship again.

Unfortunatly a lot of fighters couldnt evolve to the new less brutal restrictions (who would have otherwise killed some of these current known fighters) and were pushed out of the sport all together.

Excellent movie, I read about it on MMA.tv being on, and made sure I saw it. I liked Rites Of Passage better, but it's very close.

This movie only dealt with Mark Kerr and the 3 years of his life, from when he was considered "THE BEST" to his subsequent downfall. I watched Mark Kerr fight his last one, and it was sad.

Yah, it follows the career of Mark Kerr.

The worst part about it all is his girlfriend (wife). That bitch really dragged him down. I'd be hopped up on painkillers 24/7 if I had to deal with her too.

It was funny when they showed Kerr training with Bas Rutten and Kerr's girlfriend was there, you could just see that Bas wanted to talk mad shit about her, but couldn't.

Kerr competed in the ADCC tournament this year... he lost but I can't remember to who

Ahh, he's still around ehh??

Ya know if they let him fight with the old rules I bet he'd once again be one of the better fighters. It seemed he really strived at his best before the rule changes. He was excellent in getting in positions to strike to the skull and face with the knee. His wresting background helped him with this advantage. It seemed to really be his game.

Since the rule changes it really took em out of his game.

The side psycholigical problems with the woman and the drugs were emphasized quite a bit as they were really pitching in this movie that those were the causes of his downfall.

I belive they were factors, but the main factor was something they didnt milk. That being the rule changes and the fact these once masters had to change thier games. Many just couldnt..

Enter a new breed and style of fighter alltogether..

I thought UFC died because the guys that "win" it, all happen to be using the same martial art as the guys that own and fund it. Nice bit of cross promotion there. What was it again? Gracie Jiu Jitsu?

Bone,

The rule changes really didn't affect Mark Kerr's game as much it did Mark Coleman. They outlawed the knees to the head while on theground and headbutts, which were Coleman's mainstays. They have brought knees back, but not the headbutts. Even so, Mark Coleman won the GP that year.

Kerr just lost it. At that time he was training with Bas and the later, UFC champion, Rico Rodriquez. His last fight was really sad, he lost his size, probably since he stopped doing the juice as well.

Don't they even have weight classes in UFC now? I know they make the fuckers wear gloves or something now too. The government ruined it.

Nothing can compare to the old shit, the sight of a 400+ lb black sumo taking on a 175 lb Kung Fu expert.

That was the coolest shit ever. Anyone else see that fight where the Kung Fu guy literally broke his hand over the sumo wrestler's head? He just kept pounding and pounding until the big fucker hit the ground.

He won the match but he couldn't continue because he broke his hand.

I remember that!
That was when it was fun to watch with the guys over beer and pizza on payperview!!

Now to get our fix we've been forced to rob people and steal cars.

Damn the government for making us do this.

Ok, but take it easy. I was just trying to see if it was the same show I saw about a year ago.

I guess the guy was Mark Kerr. In the show, he cried a lot, went into rehab, and was hen-pecked beyond belief. Those comments weren't directed to his fighting ability, but other facts concerning his life portrayed in the documentary.

I like the local shows better than the UFC. You got guys who give it their all....often they also have a lack of skills which always makes for a more exciting fight ....

Pulling and holding the guard has made the ufc boring....I still practice bjj so I can get away with saying that.
