Laptop Help!!!!

Got a question for ya.... Does anyone know why my laptop will not boot? It's got power, and I've reloaded the battery etc. but when I hit the power button... nothing happens, I don't even hear the hard drive spinning. Anyone ever had this problem before? If so how did you fix it?

Did it happen after you dropped it or spilled something on it? Take it apart with a hammer, that will help.

if the power light shows its getting power but its not switching on - its probably in hibernation mode
see if there is a hibernate button and press that.

Nope, haven't spilled anything or dropped it. I shut it down as normal late last night then went to reboot and nothing.

And I missed partying with DrinkingHard last night because of this problem.

Hi Shemp, yep I've tried that several times too. I was just on the phone with Toshiba and one of their advanced technical staff is supposed to call me back within a few hours.

I think this laptop is severly locked up! But whats weird is while it is sitting here plugged in the fan kicks on and goes through its normal routine. Weird stuff here. I've been reading the manual and can't really figure out how to get it out of standby mode if thats what its in. Hopefully the tech people will know what to. I think I'm going to have to move to Vancouver, at least Van. has certified Toshiba repair centers that are open today.

Removing the battery was a good idea. Even if the hard drive croaked, you should be able to see the BIOS screen though.

If if it has a memory slot, try re-seating the memory module.

Good luck!

So you have completely taken out the battery and unplugged it too?

Thats what I thought too. Maybe the bios battery is dead. I'll just have to wait to see what toshiba has to say about it. It's a Satellite 5200 and has been rock solid till now. (knocking on wood)

laptops are hard to work with. if there is a motherboard bios battery, remove it and put it back in.

I'm temped to do that, and to reseat the ram, but the problem is if I do that I could risk voiding the guarantee on it. I'm hoping the toshiba tech will know of a hidden reset or something. I've even tried a hard shut down where you are supposed to hold down the power key for 20 to 30 seconds. But that didn't work either. Go figure... yet the fan still continues to cycle normally..... weird.

Thanks for your help everyone. I'm still waiting for Toshiba to call me. If I get it fixed I'll let you all know what the problem and cure is so that this won't hopefully happen to anyone in the future.

sounds like your hdd is locked up, but ya, dont void the warranty by gently tapping it with the insulated end of a screwdriver

Well I finally got a hold of one the Toshiba techs on the phone. We did some diagnostic tests on it and he figures the motherboard is cause of the problem. He helped me find 6 service centers here in Victoria and I'll bring it in to one of them on monday. I'm hoping that it is just the motherboard that is toast. I'll let you know either way. Am I ever glad that I back my stuff up! At least this way its only a few hours of my time to move a few files to my other pc and get it ready to work with.
