The word Islam is best translated into English as 'commitment'. Followers of Islam, called Muslims, commit their lives to peace, harmony, truthfulness, good works, charity, neighborliness, almsgiving, acceptance of religious pluralism, and diversity.

Partially true. Islam is a combination of the words peace (salam in Arabic) and subjection or commitment (to God - silm in Arabic).

Not true. Violence is allowed in war, for which there are set specific boundaries (i.e. when it is allowed and disallowed to attack and/or defend, and under which conditions)

In the West, the concept of jihad has been improperly translated as 'holy war.' Instead, jihad means 'struggle' and refers, in particular, to the personal struggle that every Muslim engages in to live a peaceful and good life.

Partially true. Although Jihad means to struggle, it's most common usage is in the context of the struggle in war. Besides referring to war, the word jihad is also used to denote the struggle against your own desire (Mind is weaker than the flesh kind of thing).

Not true. Islam states that all people are equal, EXCEPT for their religious disposition (i.e., the more pious a man is, the higher his status)

100% true.
Islam is not about terrorism. The reason why people have chosen terrorism now is because there is no leader in the Muslim world and many Muslims still fill they need to vent their anger about certain political and military that they feel were and are still directed against them. Terrorism is an un-Islamic response to this. The question is, would it be any better of it were an all-out war of state against state?
I'm not one to choose sides, but there's more to the story than what some might think. The reason why certain terrorist leaders have support amongst mainstream Muslims is not because they think Osama is such a handsome man... The West's conscience is not entirely clear in this matter either.
Again, not choosing sides, just saying that ignoring history doesn't make it go away.
