its slower than hell, and you'll be pissed because in a few weeks, they'll have faster ones for about the same price.... other than that, nope

toshiba has some excellent ratings on theirs, you can pick one up for about $185.

I would say no. Just looking at it, it looks like a DVD+RW which is the old style of DVD burner. Basically, you will NOT be able to play the DVDs you make on any DVD players other than DVD+R DVD players.

I just got a Panisonic DVD-R (notice the +R on yours and -R on mine) and they guy at Circuit City clarified this for me. Basically, they are trying to get rid of their crap cause they know it basically worthless as the new fomat is going to be -R and -RW with DVD-RAM capabilities.

My advise would be not to buy it but if you want to make DVDs that will only play on a select few DVD players (only the DVD+R ones) then this will be good for you. If you want to make DVDs that anybody can watch, get the DVD-R format.

I am sorry to say, but Flow is right. That is a piece of shit. I know a bunch of people who made a mistake of getting similar devices. When you find a good deal on DVD-R/W let us know.

There is nothing wrong with this drive that I can see.

It does both +r and +rw and it is the NEWER standard not the older -r standard.

However research what dvd player you and family has if you plan to burn movies.

However media is more expensive but it's getting closer to the same cost.

I own a HP 2x +r +rw burner and it's great, other then it being slower then I want. But my dvd and Xbox both play the + format.

This is true. There are a number of DVD standards around. Do LOTS of research and think about what the DVD's will be used for before you make this purchase.

for data storage and stuff, the toshiba units are from what i hear very good, and they'll run in a lot of set-top boxes. if it's just storage, it's pretty sweet. i think it's -r/w, as well. around $185.

if you want excellent recording flexibility, and just a nice drive, the internal sony dvd=-rw is nice, about $285 right now.

Fry's or Outpost.com currently has a $199 I believe Pioneer 4x -R dvd burner which is great. (might be ad in newspaper only)

If I was going to buy a burner I would spend the extra money and buy a Sony burner that burns both + and - formats.

ok boys and gals here is all the info you need to know. I have been in the DVD game for several years. Since back when you still could only get a glass master made to do dupes... This drive is not one you want to buy. You can geta dual DVD-R/DVD+R for about $50 more at frys. The DVD+ and DVD- is a fight for a standard between the big boys. The DVD+ is a newer format but not a better one. The DVD- is more compatible for set top dvd players. Many of the older set top DVD players will NOT play DVD+ but will play DVD-, of course almost all the newer players will play both. The DVD+ media is almost always cheaper. I have no idea why and it goes on sale very often. The DVD- almost never goes on sale. So get a dual burner and save yourself the hassle. If you want a disc more compatible on set top dvd players including old ones use DVD-R media and if you just want something cheap for newer stuff use DVD+R media. Also a 2x DVD burner takes about 45 min to burn a 4.7GB disc. I am still using my old Pioneer A203 and it still works great. Got it when it first hit the market a year or so ago.
