Is the United States broke?

Is the United States flat-out broke?

-Feds deny report citing obligations '10 times larger' than stated public debt

When the government announced this year its publicly held debt was in the neighborhood of $3.6 trillion, it was quoting a figure that "ignores massive imbalances" in other mandatory spending programs ? such as Medicare and Social Security ? which actually inflate the national debt by a factor of 10, according to published accounts.

Dallas Morning News columnist Scott Burns wrote June 1 that the government's debt is actually "a mind-numbing $43 trillion," hinting that data was left out of the current budget document because it may have hurt President Bush's chances to sell a tax cut to the American people.

Household Net Worth is over $50 Trillion. So we're still in the plus column.

About 6 Million wealthy families own $21 Trillion of that.

Have you noticed how after 9/11 the whole world supported us, felt concern and empathy for us - and now less than 2 yrs later, the world hates us more than they ever have. Thanks GW The answer is Yes - the US is broken right now... Its in the shop.

Agreed, though I think Bush (like any other leader of a country would do) is trying to make the economic recovery fast by spending billions of non-existant money. Recovery takes time, if it's rushed, huge possibilities of fuck ups.

Cheers,
Matt

the govt has alot of "rainy day funds" that dont get factored into these figures.

These funds sometimes run in the billions, and usually just keep building up, and filtering into some big shots pockets.

Add up all the intake they have, subtract all the outgoing ... you will scratch your head wondering wtf is going on with all the money.

There are millions of people in my city alone, most paying thousands per year in taxes (real estate, sales, whatever)

That is billions of dollars ... you cant tell me we are using that much in road work and welfare, heh
