I used to like Figo a lot, now I just admire him.
He learned how to play in Sporting Clube de Portugal, but his final year at the club was very weird. He decided not to renew, signed with Juventus AND another italian club (cant remember, Parma, Inter?.. ) , got a punishment for that (banned from Italy) and moved to Barcelona. Sporting got next to nothing with that transfer.

To be fair, why would anyone want to play in the Portugese league? Sporting are merely a feeder club for Man Utd. All the top Portugese players play abroad. There is no sense in lowering himself to play there.

He wants to play for Sporting because he is portuguese, Sporting supporter, and lived in the Sporting academy since he was a kid, until he moved to Barcelona. Of course he's doing much better in Spain, Italy, or England, but that doesnt mean he has no reason to come back one day.
Rui Costa wants to come back to benfica (I dont know why, they suck) , Vitor Baia came back to Porto, João Pinto never left Portugal, and they're all top players.
Of course we dont have the power to keep our top players when they are at their best, but most of them love the country and the clubs where it all began.
