According to Americans, is the term 'Single' attached to financial obligations? Single means you don't have someone who you are either falling in love or in love with. It means that if it tickles your fancy, you will not feel any guilt in having sex with whomever crosses your path. Another Canadian. Have you heard of "common usage"? Common usage in the USA for "single" is not married. Girlfriends...live in's do not count as not being single...if you are not married then you are single.

Check out the definition of "single". Marriage is not necessary for "not single" to be valid.
