I use the save for web option in photoshop. In some cases, i've been able to drastically change the size of the file without any notieable difference in quality. There are a few tutorials for ideal settings depending on colours, type of image, etc. Too lazy to look 'em up right now, though.

Photoshop takes to long, or the export batch thing sucks it seems cause I can only figure it out to save to one file that I made the batch for.
So I either have to move all my images to do another series that saves to that folder, or I have to re-make the action list. (I think I am probably pretty stupid at photoshop that is all). However photoshop has the best compresion I have seen yet. |

photoshop sucks at jpg compression period mainly because it was made first for dtp and they didn't care about file size. I'm usinbg ulead smartsaver pro 3.0, great tool, I like also the way it integrates in photoshop.

I'll second flashfreak's suggestion of Smartsaver Pro from ULead.
I've been using it for close to 3 years now and it's second to none in compression optimization. I'll also have to suggest EyeBatch if you want an easy solution for compressing batches of photos. Good Luck. |

Uleads Photo Impact does a good job of batching files.

I second the recommendation of Image Magick. It is absolutely free software. Runs on Windows and UNIX and Mac (and maybe more I don't remember). You can use the supplied programs in a shell script or you can use the library routines from C/Perl/Python (and I think PHP and maybe other language bindings).
I do both shell scripting and Perl. Really works great. Not only will it convert from e.g. tif to jpeg it will scale as well. Image Magick I also use compupic Pro. It has very powerful batch conversion features and does a good job of JPEG. It doesn't do a good enough job of scaling to let it run on its own, I have to sharpen the image afterward. Compupic Pro

Actually ImageMagick is pretty good, just resizing the image and reoutputting it usually gives you a nice decrease, works extremely well for thumbnailing but I really havent looked at it much for compression of large images.
