So what really happend? did it all just fall apart

He is not Russian. Armenian is very different. He SPEAKS Russian because of course Armenia was part of the Russian , then the Soviet , Empire for a long time. People posted pictures of him.
Dark skin, black hair -- that's no Russian. I'm sure there are ethnic Russians who lived in Armenia, perhaps even a couple generations (it certainly happened in Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia) but Nick and his family are Armenian. Various associates are Ukranian, Russian, and other assorted ethnicities of the Soviet empire.
What happened? Only Nick knows the whole truth. Something was going last week where sites started reappearing. Enough customers grabbed their data and scrammed that I guess the business was no longer viable. They reappeared on Sunday and disappeared on Friday. could it be a bad check to their ISP?
We're probably talking about $10,000 so that could take five days to clear. I know people were saying Nick charged their credit card but maybe the funds from that didn't hit the checking account fast enough to cover the check.
In any case talking to customers it is apparent Nick was lowballing people to get the business. I suspect that in the end expenses > income = bankruptcy. IOW, poor business judgement and overal mismanagement.
If you found the technical people and got them to talk I'm sure you'd get an earful.
