Digital backs that take real lenses

Who has one? Who can recommend a good one? Post your experiences and thoughts on the topic, please.

You are talking about digital SLR cameras, right? If so, they are very popular among content providers. The upper level Nikon, Canon, Fuji, (etc.) cameras all take standard lenses. I just bought a Canon EOS 10D, and it is a real Canon EOS camera that takes Canon EF lenses.

Yes, that's what I have in mind. I am looking for specific recommendations. These cameras are still somewhat rarefied and it's hard to find good information on them.

I'm not familiar with that camera. I own some Nikons, myself. Not bad for reasonably priced hardware. I am not looking for the Hasselblad of digital media, just decent quality pics

My advice would be to check out http://www.dpreview.com and see what they think.

All of the digital SLRs from major companies seem to compete well with each other. I happen to prefer the new Canon, but which is best for you may come down to the details of how they perform.

Canon 10-D is a winner. Unless you step up the Canon 1-Ds, you're not going to find a better camera. You can use the full range of Canon glass.

You can read all you want here: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos10d/

After all the reviews, and looking at price, I knew right away that was the one I wanted. Then again, we were a Canon family when I was a kid.

I'm diverting a few $$ for one along with a couple of lenses. My SLR days were back in the dark ages and the only glass I have is some old Pentax stuff. I've been shooting digital with a Canon G-2 for the past 6 months and after 3,000 shots I'm sold on them. I wish I already had an investment in Canon SLR, then it would be a lot less painful, but there really is no alternative these days.

I'm glad someone sorted out the confusion of "digital back." I was wondering why, with all the great digital cameras out there now, someone would want to futz around with a digital back on a camera not designed for digital. Unless one had a fancy ass Sinar or Hasselblad or something.

The way he said it, I just assumed he didn't mean "back", but rather "body".

They can take Nikon D mount lenses and give you some amazing quality and great color balances for the price. They're a great Nikon D1 alternative with a lower price tag.

I read some reviews of the Fuji SLRs, and I wasn't impressed.

Really? I haven't read any reviews but was impressed by trying the products out myself. Got any URLs to the reviews that I could look at?

Depends how much you want to spend and also depends what your using now.

I've been shooting chromes on Nikon's for awhile, so when I wanted to go Digital, buying a Canon would have cost me much more because I would also need to buy new lenses.

All my Nikkor lenses work on the pro line of Nikon's Digital cameras. I got a good deal on a D100 and it worked with all my lenses, so thats the camera I bought.

The 10D from Canon is a replacement for their D60 line and is a fairly new camera, so it has more features then the D100. But if you have Nikon lenses, then you might want to check out the D100 or D1X.

Another camera to keep your eye on is the new Kodak. It, sadly has had some problems and delays, but it features a Nikon body and can use your Nikon lenses It is supposed to be around the same price as the D1X (4 to 5k), but will be nearly 14 megapixels.

Dpreview.com has a in-depth review of it.

I read the DPReview reviews of the Canon D60, the Fuji, and the Nikon D1. They were all very similar, but the Fuji didn't do as well at a few things, like clarity in lower light situations and sharpness of details. Those things matter to me, and the Canon seemed to have the edge. Now that the D60 has been replaced with the 10D, it is even more impressive.

I personally use the Nikon D100(my second one, courtesy of Lensman) with a 24-85 af lens. I love the speed and quality. One thing to keep in mind tough, even if you are able to use different lenses, they may not be able to keep up with the camera speed, in rapid fire auto settings.

I am looking at the 28-135 Canon lens, with the image stabilizer. Looks great for dealing with low light without a tripod.
