Columbia House to Offer Video Games to Its 11 Million Members
New Initiative Rolling Out to Complement Existing DVD and Music Clubs
The Columbia House Company, the largest direct marketer of entertainment in America, has signed a strategic consulting agreement with Majesco, one of the fastest growing publishers of interactive entertainment software. Together, the companies will market and sell video games to the 11 million members of the Columbia House DVD and Music Clubs. The first phase of the new strategy launches on June 11 with an announcement of the offering targeting Columbia House's DVD membership base. "We're excited and our members should be excited," said Scott Flanders, chairman and CEO of Columbia House. "Our research shows that there is a significant demand for video games among our DVD and Music club members. The marketing and selling of video games makes sense on many levels -- extending our product offerings while significantly improving our members' experience. It's a very natural progression of the Columbia House business, and we believe Majesco is the right partner to help us implement it." Majesco is recognized both for its ascension as a video game publisher and its strong relationships in the video game development, publishing and retail communities. The company will assist Columbia House in procuring all game-related product from all major video game publishers, including new releases, pre-orders, "greatest hits" and close-out titles. In addition, Majesco will provide merchandising, co-op advertising and strategic consulting. "We are excited to work with such a well-respected company as Columbia House in providing their 11 million consumers with great interactive entertainment," said Jesse Sutton, president of Majesco. "Columbia House has a tremendous offline and online presence, and can tap into its historical purchase data to create highly targeted promotions. Their enthusiasm for video games is understandable, and with Majesco having one of the strongest distribution channels in the video game industry, our partnership is a perfect fit." The June 11 launch to DVD Club members will be followed by a mid-July launch for Music Club members. Initially, around 100 different SKUs will be offered across the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system, Xbox(TM) video game system from Microsoft, and Nintendo GameCube(TM). This includes a mixture of new releases, PlayStation 2 Greatest Hits, Xbox Platinum Hits, value-priced closeouts and pre-orders for titles.
