French sex show during pope visit

ZAGREB (Reuters) - Police had to stop angry Croats attacking French actors simulating sex outside the cathedral in the capital Zagreb during a papal visit to the former Yugoslav republic, a newspaper reports.

"This is a Catholic country," local people shouted at the pair from an experimental street theatre group called Cacahuete. "We won't have infidels like you walking around Zagreb on a holy day -- when the Pope is in Croatia."

The pair had just begun their provocative performance on Saturday when local people began to push and shove them, the daily Jutarnji List said. Police then intervened to stop the show and prevent a full-scale fight from breaking out, it said.

Pope John Paul is on his third visit to Croatia, where almost 90 percent of the population declares itself Catholic. The Pontiff is not visiting the capital on this trip.

"It's obvious Croats love the Pope more than this kind of somewhat eccentric art," the paper quoted actress Jody Corrieri as saying.
