Sony merging games and tv/internet
http://www.gamespydaily.com/news/scr...ts.asp?id=5110
Sony PSX Announced PlayStation 2 gets upgraded to become home entertainment unit. Wednesday May 28, 2003 | hardcore_pawn After Sony's huge E3 announcement earlier this month regarding its upcoming entry into the handheld gaming market -- with the new PSP system -- another big revelation hit Japan this morning. Sony has officially announced its new PSX console -- an upgraded PlayStation 2 system -- which it is marketing as a home entertainment system. Featuring a DVD recorder, 120 GB hard drive, internet functionality and a TV tuner, the PSX will allow users to download different forms of media from the internet, as well as watching movies, listening to music and of course playing PS2 games. There's also speculation that the hard drive will allow users to record TV shows -- like ReplayTV or TiVO -- with the option of then burning content to DVD. Initial reports indicate that the PSX will only support broadband connectivity -- so long dial-up users -- and will also support USB 2.0 as well as Sony Memory Stick technology. Given the PlayStation 2's leadership position in the video game market, the PSX looks set to fill the gap between games and general home entertainment rather well. The PSX will hit Japan later this year, following with released in U.S. and Europe sometime next year -- currently there is no information on a price point. GameSpy will bring you more detailed information on the PSX as it becomes available. |
