"TASK C:Thrillseekers 'Soft adventure' has become a new form of holiday experience. The activities that travel agencies are offering go from whitewater rafting to climbing some of the world's highest mountains. But, for some people this is not exciting enough. They want to take part in extreme sports. The main attraction of these sports is that they are risky. People who do them might be injured or even die. Take 'base jumping', for example, that's parachuting from cliffs and tall buildings. In the USA it's forbidden. And when you look at the statistics you'll know why: one in 700 base jumps ends in a death. This compares to only one in 90,000 for traditional parachuting. Another extremely dangerous sport is 'absolute diving'. That's diving while you hold your breath * and a big weight. The world record is 417 feet. Why is it that more and more people want to experience danger? Brendan Koerner, a Washington journalist who has written many articles about extreme sports, explains that the popularity of extreme sports in America is a reaction against the comfortable life many people live there. There are lots of little rules in American life that try to make it as safe as possible. This goes against the American sense of adventure. "Look at all those Hollywood movies, there are all sorts of action stars. And in real life adventure freaks are asking, 'Where is my thrill?' "

A couple of people who I used to go to university with were avid base jumpers - they reckoned that jumping from a cliff really fucked with your senses, as it just felt like the cliff face was the ground and you were flying above it...
Gotta try it one day - tried just about everything else that insane ![]() |

Ive jumped off a few high places, but always into water and never with a parachute.
Theres a railroad crossing in Mississippi when I was in college we would go on the weekends some time, its about a 10 second drop into a creek. Rail road bridges are a common starting base for jumpers, as they usually go over water and are quite high. Ive always wanted to get into base jumping. Back home there was always places to jump from, but again nothing nearly as high as real base jumpers, but i admit it is very addictive.

I BASE jump and skydive. About 1200 skydives and did my 25 base jump weekend before last.
I've base jumped 3,500 ft cliffs in Norway, 350 ft cliffs in Moab, 400-900 ft cliffs in WA, antennae's, bridges in W. Virginia, Washington, Idaho, California. I fucking love it, it's the only reason I work - to pay for more base jumping expeditions. It's an epic adventure every time, once you start - you won't stop. Takes years of skydiving training though, without it, you will die. I have hours of video footage just not online yet. Crazy shit. |
