The market is pretty dead. Good time to buy.

I would recommend going to shows and buying cards that are in perfect condition but not graded and then pay for the grading.

A card that sells for $50 mint, ungraded might be worth $3,000 graded gem mint. Rather than paying $3,000 for the graded mint card, buy up the best 50 copies of the card you can find at a convention and send them all into be graded. Keep the best copy for yourself and sell the rest on Ebay. You will make a profit.

I plan on buying high-grade star cards, I want to have a nice collection to hold on to for a few years. After a year I'm hoping I'll have $100k worth of cards.

If you want real value, go a bit older than that. Mint condition cards of Cobb, Gehrig, Ruth, etc. are extremely scarce compared to 50-60's Topps issues. If you REALLY want to have fun, collect hockey cards from the same period. They're 20 times as rare, and way cheaper (somewhat underpriced in my opinion),
