Sat and read a shitload of GFY, built 2 free sites. 3 paysites.

Freesites: galleries update every 12 hours, Tons of content, Tons of advertising, advertising is wieghted to who ever is highest converting for the day. Between the sites there are 200,000 active members.

Paysites: traffic comes from our freesites, although we are getting ready to buy traffic (not from choker, yes I read the whole thread).

Not to bad for a newbie. Its a side project that brings in some extra income. Nothing full time. All in my (not so) spare time.

I am a programmer not a designer, so the whole thing came from a programming standpoint rather than a designer.

It does seem to be a popular cycle. Paysites can be done on a shoestring budget, I suppose. But the more money you spend, the more you are likely to make. I wouldn't recommend getting into that part of the biz without $20-40k to invest in your first site and the corresponding affiliate program. Of course, if you can shoot the content yourself, you are cutting the biggest cost.
