It is when a player hollows out his bat and puts cork in it - making it lighter and will hit more homeruns.

The Cubs had runners at second and third when Sosa broke his bat with a grounder to second that at first appeared to drive in a run.

But crew chief Tim McClelland gathered with the other three umpires to examine the bat. Cubs manager Dusty Baker came out and the umpires showed the bat to him.

hahahahahahahahahahahaa

This is a conspiracy. The Cubs wanted to trade him, but the fan backlash would have been huge. Now they have a reason. HMMMMM.....

No shit. That seriously casts doubt over all his previous achievements. His reputation is permanently tarnished.

Damn, the Cubs are my team. They were doing great this year. This is not good!

Why would the Cubs want to trade Sammy? Other than to save $$$

Just as they said on TV..... He's broken many bats before, and those were not corked. So this was something he very rarely did, or just now started.

So it's not very logical to say the 500 HR's were tainted.

Take a rubber ball and bounce it off the ground, and then do the same with a ball shape made of wood

A lighter bat, with a more elastic core, makes it easier to hit home runs. Major League Baseball has very specific equipment that is allowed, and this is a big no-no... and a well known one.

He fucked up. He cheated, and the fans will remember that. The whole point of a *game* is to play within the rules. Otherwise, you're playing a different game.

Wow. Not a single year over 40 homers until 98 when he suddenly hits 66 and just stays up in that area from then on.

And just to be fair, the big difference I noticed at the time was that Sammy quit swinging at everything he saw and became much more selective. He always had massive power, but his plate discipline was atrocious until '98.

he should end up with a 12 game suspension and his bats should be subject to inspection at anytime.

It sucks that he cheated like that. Honestly I don't think he's been using one the whole time, he's been in a bad slump since coming off the DL, maybe he was looking for an edge.

To say that he's a shitty hitter because he used a corked bat is ridiculous.....there's a lot more corked bats out there than you realize, and the people talking shit right now probably couldn't make contact with a 90mph+ fastball with a whiffle ball bat.

Albert Belle got caught corking his bat once, and he hit a shitload of homers afterwards.

BTW, I agree, cheating is bad, no excuse for it, but it doesn't mean Sosa is a bad hitter, nor do I think it should negate any of the things he's accomplished thus far.
