But I am open to suggestions for a replacement nominee.

Surely you have a suggestion or two KK? :Graucho

Kimmykim 06-03-2003 10:37 PM

You don't have a clear definition of ethics versus morals I hate to say, so you're nominations are not right.

Hell a serial killer can have great ethics.

More often than not, the terms "ethics" and "morals" can be used synonymously. For example look at this dictionary definition:

Quote:

eth?ics

Pronunciation: (eth'iks), [key]
?n.pl.
1. (used with a sing. or pl. v.) a system of moral principles: the ethics of a culture.
2. the rules of conduct recognized in respect to a particular class of human actions or a particular group, culture, etc.: medical ethics; Christian ethics.
3. moral principles, as of an individual: His ethics forbade betrayal of a confidence.
4. (usually used with a sing. v.) that branch of philosophy dealing with values relating to human conduct, with respect to the rightness and wrongness of certain actions and to the goodness and badness of the motives and ends of such actions. Cf. axiological ethics, deontological ethics.
I agree that I haven't defined what system of ethical/moral principles should govern the Sobe Awards, but it would be impossible to do so succinctly. And besides, I would hate to see any truly worthy candidates slip through the cracks on the basis of a semantic technicality. I did however provide some examples of unethical people, "thieves, rapists, spammers and con-artists". All of the short-listed nominees appear to fit one or more of these categories :Graucho

Absolutely. I don't think that morals and ethics are at all interchangeable, not from the strict definition of either.

Morals are what you think OF things, ethics are the way you going about DOING things.

For instance, you are an attorney -- a defense attorney to be specific.

You are selected by your office to defend someone who bombed an abortion clinic allegedly.

You don't believe in abortion and you think the guy is guilty.

This is morals.

You go before the jury etc and you present them with reasonable doubt, your client is gets a not guilty verdict because you've done the best job you could for your client.

This is ethics.

Then why does the very first definition in the dictionary say:

Quote:

a system of moral principles
Is the dictionary wrong?

Sorry KK, I think your example is really bad here, and I was really expecting you to come up with a convincing counter-point. I mean, there are so many other factors involved in your scenario.

An attorney, especially a defense attorney, has to put aside moral values and ethics before even getting into the profession. There are legal and professional considerations they need to worry about when being a defense attorney, and if you are going to let things like guilt get in the way of providing the best defense, then you should become a prosecuting attorney instead.

Someone that does not like blood does not enter employment as an emergency room nurse.

If that's a hint at Steve Goldman (among his many aliases), I totally agree. In fact he should be FIRST on the list!

BD, we keep agreeing on things! hehe

Groove, here, this says it all ... actually that's only about two-thirds of it but it will do. http://galleryspots.com/cheats/steve/stevegoldman.htm

You're just equivocating morals and ethics all over again. The Lawyer has morals, but the "legal and professional considerations" as you put it are his professional ethics.

Groove 06-04-2003 12:39 AM

WOW! Goldman's definitely a contender :thumbsup

My revised short list is:

  • lil2rich4u2 - for his shameless thieving.
  • SoBeGirl - for reneging on agreements and spamming.
  • SonOfRage - for being an unrepentant rapist.
  • Steve Goldman - for being a major scammer.

Other nominations are still welcome :glugglug

Mmmm, possible problem...

Is Steve Goldman a "GFY Member"?

well, the pattern is he scams, he gets caught, he retires forever, he returns under a different alias.

hard to say what stage he may be in right now. if he is not here now, he will be back.

Are ethics responsibilities? A lawyer has legal and professional duties, ethics be damned

I am sure if we work at it, we can find something to disagree on . . . . how about this: Ginger or Mary Ann?

Dravyk 06-04-2003 02:51 AM

LOL, BD!!!

No brainer! MaryAnn all the way!!!! :thumbsup

You? ... And no write-ins for Mrs. Howe please! :)

Nice interview there, PD!

While we're trading ... here's a nice interview they did on my partner, Electra.

They didn't ask her the same question though. :glugglug

I suppose we could make the Sobes open to both current and former GFY members. But this could disadvantage some of our current members. I'd hate to see a situation where Sobe or lil2rich4u2 didn't even receive a nomination! For example, what about this sasush guy, does he deserve a nomination too? Maybe I should make it five nominees with no more than two former members? That way at least the current delinquents will be in the majority :)

Groove 06-04-2003 08:07 AM

*bump* Any more nominations?

SoBeGirl Video 06-05-2003 09:25 AM

No, the SoBe Award should be for current members only. What is this a frikin museum? Current members only....

I'm inclined to agree with you Sobe. But that would leave us short one nominee.

If we have:

1) lil2rich4u2
2) SoBeGirl
3) SonOfRage
4) ????

Who should be our fourth nominee?

So we are talking about the present, how about charly?

BTW, SonOFRage should be number one.

They're listed alphabetically.

The final order, and the winner, will be determined by a poll.

OK, I nominate the(G)thang for spamming porn to children.

Anyone got any better nominations?

SoBeGirl Video 06-06-2003 07:51 PM

Did I win yet?

JFPdude 06-06-2003 07:53 PM

Sorry sobe I know you wanted this prize but in light of recent events there is a new winner ...

Nick Tukhman of likewhoa took the prize when he lied to all his customers and took all thier businesses down the tubes with his business.

If there ever was an unethical move on a business owners part that took the cake.

You would have to do something really amazing to top what we seen today.

Lovematch gets my nomination for fuck up of the century...lol

Get a 2 Million dollar judgment against him for ripping people off, deflaming a company, stealing content, scripts and then reselling them. Then not showing up for the hearing and getting a default Judgment against him.
Which is still denies..lolol

Then, to act like he is innocent and still tries to show his face on here.
But, ins't everyone is prison, innocent? lol

Now, if Lovematch isn't a fuckup. I dunno what is.
