I saw this thread and was going to post pics of the pond I helped my parents build...Then I saw your pics and decided not to embarrass myself. That is the nicest pond I have EVER seen. Very cool.

We don't even have a back garden. It's paved over, as a driveway. We don't even have a car.

I think I will dig us a pond tomorrow. How hard can it be?

Virtually nothing once the water temp get below 50 degrees. In the early Spring it is drained and pressure washed. There's weeding and plant upkeep of course. When the weather is warm I have to clean out the catch-net in the skimmer box at least every other day. All else that's left is feeding the koi, dodging the skunks and chasing the racoons away.

We have great blue herons that like to visit. Without the netting, they'd be eating a few thousand in koi for lunch. It also keeps the racoons somewhat at bay. The eagles circle overhead but I think they can see the net and don't bother trying.

Maybe if I smoked.

I just love hearing the water. You can open the windows in my house and it sounds like it's raining all the time. Yeah it's Washington state, but sometimes it doesn't rain and the pond makes it sound like it ;)

Pick up a couple of these Scarecrows and you can ditch the nets. Works for the birds and the coons. My parents have some Koi that are worth over a grand each plus all the smaller ones. The scarecrows work very well. No fish have been lost since they added 2 of them.

Tried them my first summer. The herons didn't blink nor did the racoons. I was the only one getting wet and running from the dang scarecrows.

Those are beautiful!!! You ever go to the flower show in Seattle where they have the landscaper competitions with the indoor backyards complete with water features in the convention center? I wanted to move in when I went.

I missed it this year, but it was amazing last year. There was this one medieval-themed landscape with tons of flowers and a whole fallen knight's armor and mist constantly coming out of the water feature and we were paying models back in our hotel suite and I kept being like ooh I just have to look at the arthurian water feature one more time. I'm definitely going this winter.

Well with the netting I've only list one koi to either a heron or a coon in the last 18 months. It's worth the peace of mind. Even motion sensored lights didn't help.

We trapped 5 last summer along with 11 skunks. I don't mind the skunks. They aren't supposed to eat the bait for the coons, but they do. The largest coon was easily 30 to 40 lbs.

Yeah I know, still it is beautiful and I would kill to have a yard like that to play with. Mine is so small that I have to limit what I can do.

Thanks all. I love it. Had this area of land that was too steep to even walk and needed to do something with it. Didn't really want more grass to mow and a water feature is one of the few landscaping things you can do to increase home value.

Sometimes it's a frustration, but when everything is in bloom and running smoothly, it's great to just go sit outside and watch and listen.
