Drag Strip Tomorrow

Pictures of car

I'm going to the track tomorrow...and wondering if I should run my stock 18" ROH RT wheels (245 width) or put my 16" tires back on (only 225 width). Obviously worse rotation with 18" wheels...but more grip on the track.

Any serious QM guys here?

Actually mine doesn't even do that well...it's not that quick of a car, just looking to see what it will run.

I'm not trying to turn it into anti-american car thread, it is a fact american cars handle like crap, well most of them, but on the streight line they are fast. Drag racing not even popular in Europe, while here it is all about how fast you can do a 1/4mile.

P.S. Anyway, nice car looks quick, and I;m pretty sure it is.

if that car is capable of really smoking the tires drop it even more.

I plan on dropping the pressure from 35 PSI to 25 PSI regardless of the wheels on the rears, and keeping the front tires rock solid.

Any honestly, this car doesn't put out much power (just a 3.8L v6, not a z28 LS1/LT1). We're talking around 200 RWHP...so it's not a lot of power. I think the smaller tires deflated a bit would probably suit me best. Traction hasn't really ever been a problem...I think for me it's about weight.

camaro, corvette, firebird, mustang, protege, SSR, prowler, viper, to name a few american cars that can handle. anyone who's driven an iroc or a 1le knows... those cars are on rails, from the factory. but who's bitching?

actually, drag racing over the past few years is gaining a lot of worldwide growth, and yes even in europe.

does your camaro have an open rear? i remember i played with the rear tires on mine, dropped (if i remember correctly) the passenger rear 5psi lower than the driver's (whichever side gets loaded on launch), and the rear end would *always* hook up just as good as a damn posi. i shit you not, it works awesome. shemp probably remembers which side gets loaded... i'm pretty sure it's the passenger side, but i'm tired so i can't remember for sure.

the only problem with that is he's probably running Z's on that car, (at least, i would at that size), and lowering the pressure may not help much... i know the 255ZR16's i had on the back of my roc would pretty much hold the car up just fine on low air pres... the sidewalls are just too stiff...

Those are Kumho Ecsta 712. Z rated tires. Cheap korean tires.

hrm.... ever driven a camaro? when my iroc was stock it had NO body roll. none. haven't driven the new ones, but i have a couple friends that own them and they say pretty much the same thing. i also doubt that the F body would be tested in lineups for handling and top speed with ferraris, vettes, porsches and lambos if it were such a poor vehicle.

i'll admit most of the mustangs aren't much of a contender, but they do okay.

mazda japanese? hardly, it's a ford, don'tcha know?

actually 3.8l camaro is 200 flywheel hp, so you are pushing about

nope, but i raced one, and when the road started to twist, i felt really bad for camaro's owner.
If Ford has shares in Mazda doesn't mean Mazda is a US brand.

ford OWNS mazda, and was making a lot of their products before they fully owned them. if you look at the ford/mazda lineup, they share some of the same models, and a lot of the vehicles share similar equipment. i used to sell at a ford/mazda dealership.

the only mazdas that don't really directly correspond with a ford product are the protege, mellenia, miata and 626/6. i haven't gotten a clost look at the 6 though, so it might be a lot of ford stuff too. oh, the rx8, i don't know anything about that either. but, even some of the "mazda" lines run a lot of ford stuff.

Actually it's 200 HP at the engine but I'm running CAI/Ram Air kit..a K&N filter...and an open exhaust. All that is usually good for 15 HP or so...and I got readings at 193 on my latest G-Tech readouts (very acurate). So I just rounded up another 7 HP!

Yes, I have Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 245/40/18 Tires...Z rated I believe. Will it help with lowering the pressure on those? And on my car, I do NOT have limitd slip differential, so the driver side rear wheel pushes a bit more HP...so I'd imagine deflating it abit probably helps.

adjusting your rear pressures for torque will help the rear hook up... in fact, adding 2-3 psi on the driver's side could even help (while airing down the passenger side about 5psi or so). it'll load better.

as far as airing them down for traction, you could try it but if they're really stiff like a lot of ZR tires, it probably won't make as much of a difference. it makes a big difference with slicks, where they'll get that nice wrinkle and grip, but not as much with a ZR. you might just wear it oddly and prematurely.

I'm probably just going to run the stock tires at normal PSI and then the 18" tires at normal PSI...and see what happens.

I'd imagine I'll run quite a bit better on the stock tires...cause of the lesser amount of mass rotating.
