Delivery food is insanely expensive in Canada

Last night my neighbour had this brilliant plan of ordering pizzas while I was getting hammered. I said I had no money and he was like "Oh yeah just chip in $20 that'll be enough for a couple of large pizzas delivered..."

Instead, I just bought a couple of ghetto 8% beers and guzzled it until I passed out without spending money on food.

Turns out, two large pizzas delivered was getting close to $80 after tax, tip, delivery fees! Buddy split it with the neighbour and said it arrived cold and it was shittier than pizza pops he had in the freezer. For nearly $80!!!!

2025 is going to be the year where two large pizzas, delivered, after tax, tip, and delivery... I would not be shocked if it hits $90-100 by 2026.

Blows my mind watching people use Door Dash for McDonald's and Taco Bell.

People are paying for the convenience of not having to go out and do it themselves. It's especially useful for those who are disabled, too. I have friends in South-East Asia who never pick up food themselves, because delivery is so ubiquitous in the culture.

I think a lot of people undervalue their own time, and gas can be more expensive than most people factor (because it's a regular consumable.) Fast food is probably not the best value for delivery, but then again pizza was like the #1 delivered food before Door Dash existed.

This is unrelated to fast food delivery, but I did the math a few years ago, and I wasn't really saving that much money doing groceries myself because of the time and distance associated with the process. I have all of my groceries delivered now.

I've had to eliminate restaurant food from my budget, just because it's so expensive. Meals that were $10 are now $20 in-person!

I'm guilty of abusing DoorDash, among the others (all of them). The convenience fee is high, but you really get what you pay for if you value your time and can afford it. Plus I like supporting gig workers.

One of my new year resolutions was to cut the shit out tho, only because I want to get into cooking more. Probably still going to instacart the groceries tho.

Pizza places still have direct delivery that's typically free or next to it compared to the delivery apps.

Cooking is a really enjoyable skill that can be started relatively easy, and the more you do it, the better you get!

EDIT: All of the pizza places that used to do their own delivery around where I live, switched to Door Dash behind the scenes.

yeah well it's the same here in Spain
                    although not as high
but for 2 little cesar pizzas + delivery, tip, uber eats fees, it's an easy €30

There is a supermarket close to my place, fresh pizzas are at €4, I just need to cook them for 10 minutes and I save 20€
+ i have to walk 1000 steps to get them which is healthy for my ass.

Usually I boycott Uber Eats cuz fuck them
I don't want to give them my money unless there is no other choice.
I order like once every 3 months.

Pre-COVID, you could get a buttfuck load of Chinese food delivered for like $30 bucks after tax and tip, because a "dinner for two" was a big bag of like 3 items plus eggrolls and fortune cookies and the dinner containers would be stuffed to the brim so when you opened the lid, the lid popped up and food spilled out!

POST-COVID, now a dinner for 2 is $60+ without tax, tip, or delivery fee!!!!

As a seasoned alcoholic, I know that the ol' liver sometimes needs a Chinese food extravaganza to keep your body from shutting down, and the potency of MSG and grease is like steroids for your battered and abused alcohol-processing-organ.

Now? I might have to quit drinking because all of the best hangover foods and recovery meals are fucking RIDICULOUS... Even "dinner for 1" at a number of Chinese places I've grabbed takeout from... the TAKEOUT is $20+ tax, time to drive there, gas, and then the "dinner" is basically a half empty container with like 4 sweet and sour chicken balls, like a half cup of beef black bean broccoli, and then like the rest is shitty fried rice or cheap ass noodles. Inside the actual chicken balls now is like a fucking chicken toe worth of actual chicken as the batter is like 99% of the entire chicken ball. Last fucking place I went, I swear, they just added chicken flavour to the batter and there was no chicken inside the fucking ball! Also places CHARGE $1 for a fucking fortune cookie now! Cocksuckers!

I grab one from Whole Foods, add extra toppings, throw it on the pizza stone. I don't like buying food that can be made fairly easily at home.

That's the way to do it. Whole Foods even sells the dough ready to go. It's good dough, you just stretch it, top some sauce and whatever else you want and done for a fraction of the price.

It blows me away how people spend their money.

I always make the mistake of thinking that others think like I do, and then am shocked when they do things like order Uber eats 3x per week. These people also always complain they can't afford anything. I have no idea how to connect with them.

Like fuzebox said above, "ordering limos for a sandwich,"

Do you remember things like "If your pizza isn't delivered in 30 minutes or less, it's free"?

Pizza delivery when I was a teenager, not just for Dominos, but for other pizza places, was a legit good income. The richest teenagers when I was a kid were pizza delivery drivers in their mom's civic!

I'll never forget that back then, ordering food for delivery was fucking cheap as fuck and people didn't hesitate to order food for delivery.

I can order several large pizzas for close to 80s plus pop etc. for aroundd 80 and it arrives within 40 min's hot and steaming. I don't drink alcohol at all. BTW live in Ontario. I can get cheaper pizza but that's top of the line for the family

For $80 you can eat for a WEEK in Thailand...and it will be delicious food, too.

$60 us that's like €58 yeah that's pretty fucking expensive, no way i'm spending this

It's just the principle : i'd rather eat dry bread and wait for the next morning to go to the supermarket.

I have the money it's not a problem, but I just do not want to spend that much. No fucking way
