The only things from his companies that work and fly are his rockets and spacecraft, and they only fly because they are built on NASA technology, funded by NASA's generous contracts. These contracts operate on the principle: if it launches, great; if it explodes, you take the blame, so the public and the taxpayers don't give us a hard time.
