How long can you go without income?

I often hear stories about webmasters or models who lost their income because of sickness, hackers, fraud, whatever, and suddenly lose their income for at least a while. Some ask for the help of others, some quit porn and take a day job, etc. Seemingly, many webmasters do not save enough money to take care of themselves for an extended period of time without income.

Now, what I'm curious about is what the GFY public thinks about this subject. Do you save enough to make sure you have enough even when times get rough, or are you more concerned with living the good life while you can?

Personally, I try to keep a buffer for about 6-12 months without any additional income, just to be on the safe side. So what buffer do you guys keep - how long can you go without any income at all?

My first goal as a webmaster was to get a years worth of income socked away in savings. Now I've probably got 3-4.. more if I sold some of my collectibles (wine, rare books) etc.

Not very long at all. I haven't worked in 5 years at a normal job and I've always managed. I've learned many things over the years that I can always do if something comes up. Now if I got sick and was unable to work I have great friends and family that I can depend on 100%.

I had enough to last for about four months. I know this because I was screwed-over and had to test how long I could survive without my main source of income, my sites.

Right now, I could last about a month. It takes a while to save up, especially if you are basically self employed.

Your utilities cost more than your rent?

Before ADSL (256kbps) I was burning money with my phone bill.

Now that I will move to another state I hope the internet access they have at the building is good (because its cheap - $20). About 10-12 days ago they were there installing the cables and stuff, but it seens like the cable that goes to my appartment is still unplugged.

Based on the current balance in my emergency fund, I would be fine for about 2 years (probably more like 5 years if I was more frugal).

As long as it takes. Been without it for 6 months, but it is recently working out. Finally on the right track when people said I would not last for more than a week. Vancouver had a chance to employ a hard working individual like me but......thier loss. I have been able to generate income to last me 10 years.

that depends.. i mean i can go buy $800 gucci shirts and stuff like i do now and last not very long.. or i could upon loss of income stop spending so much and last forever...

i think most webmasters are ballers, though.. and just spend a lot and don't think about saving.

I have never been without job offers for less than 10 days. I currently refuse them all because of my studies and still more job offers coming to my house. Sometimes companies call me at phone to talk about new job they offer me...
So I will always have enought money to live unless I break my hed or amputate it at all.

I thing it's good to be me and have my knowledge and my experience

Well I've had some personal and financial setbacks in the last year or so including separating my wife of 13 years and my dad dying which put in a deep deppression for 2 months, now my reserves are all tapped out and I'm actually in the negatives but I've got a few projects lined up and I'm confident I'll return to profitability quickly with hard work and dedication.
