      Davinci Resolve

You might think its overkill, as it a professional program, but its free and just because it has the options to do anything a pro would need, doesn't mean you have to use all the options.

Any basic thing you might wanna do, will be covered here in simple 1 / 2 minute straight to the point tutorials.

          Windows, Right?

I've been using clipchamp. You gonna be on the internet to use it, which sucks. But it is free.
I want to try Davinci Resolve though after reading this thread.

A lot depends on your pc spec, and a low power pc may crash with 4k but be fine with 1080.

But as CS states, such as Davinci Resolve would be fine. As you can be very basic, but over time you can learn more and more if you want. But if you have a low power pc it may crash.

If you want something basic, look for old copies of windows movie maker, as I still use it for basic things almost each day.

              But

Do you have an iphone or ipad as imovie is decent.

The problem with the basic stuff is you may be frustrated in not doing basic stuff, and not having layers.

And if it is a school project i would suggest using Davinci Resolve as if I was at school it would be the one softwear I would want to learn.

Openshot Video Editor is pretty lightweight and works okay.

The question is, what spec is your pc, and do you plan to edit 4k vid?

As you may find 4k on a low spec pc crashes like crazy.

But the software most people have stated is the best bet. As somone new can edit simply, but it gives them a chance to learn and experiment as they go.
