Being the only one in this thread that actually LIVES in New York (Manhattan) I can give you a proper answer:

First, no roommates? OK then you are looking at living in a studio outside Manhattan. Like far, far away in the Bronx or Brooklyn or Queens (or, heaven help you, Staten Island with all the aliens).

But even then your chances are slim. Most studios are going for $2500-$3000 now. The average (average!) for a one bedroom in Manhattan is $4700.

So unless you find a sweet sublet deal (possible) or a rent-controlled apartment (doubtful) or a shady building manager willing to take $5-20k to "get you in" (possible but not recommended) the answer is basically "no".

New York is not just Manhattan. I used to live in Manhattan and had no troubles spending $500 per day(not including rent) and that was just a basic life, going out, paying for food...then went UpState, just 2 hours from NYC and was barely spending $500 per month(not including rent). $500 was my rent UpState, including a gym, pool, library, outdoor park, etc. Really big differences within just the state.

Ernest Hemingway lived there for a while. In fact, he married a local gal and wrote parts of "A Farewell to Arms" in her family's barn.

So there's some history there. In fact, you could probably live pretty well! It's right in the middle between New York and Los Angeles.

I'm sure it is doable, I met someone surviving off $700 a month back in like 2015... part of their religion was they had to survive on at little as possible. They sold candles in very artistic shapes all summer for like $12,000 in profit all summer and lived off that money all year. They even made a trip to thailand each year.

It was filmed in the mid-fifties and is definitely a must-see. Elia Kazan was no slouch. Andy Griffith was nobody until this film came out. This film mirrors today and it's scary.
