Apocalypse Now is a rubbish film

I just watched it again, and it is tosh.

Not to mention the fact they kill a cow and I hope the puppy was not harmed.

    But it is tosh.

All it is, is Martin Sheen doing a talk over, as they go on a boat down a river, meet a few french, then see Marlon Brando who throws water over his head a does a few looks, and reads a poem, then is killed.

Nobody wanted to draft your ass back then, so no wonder you can't relate to the film.

This guy died at 20 years old in the middle of some jungle somewhere. His body was probably never even recovered. He's just one of 50,000+. Life is meaningless.

Sorry but I can't relate to your question - are you saying his dislike for the movie is due to the fact he didn't fear being drafted?

That would exclude many movies using your logic.

I've watched the movie a few times but although they took liberties in some areas the truth is that the war caused many soldiers to loose their minds/souls. This movie took it to the extreme. Personally I'm not a big fan of the movie either though there were parts that were filmed very well. That being said - I don't think it was meant to be a authentic representation of the day - but like Lord of the Flies - a general overview of the human condition when men are placed in a situation beyond what anyone could endure. Someone who was once innocent - kind and loving turns into a psychotic killer and insane

            I am in the UK.

So the 'draft' does not apply to me, plus I was not born at the time.

It has a few decent lines, such as the I love the smell of in the morning, plus the classic music being played.

It would have been better without all the talk over.

The ending just feels rushed, and a bit of a mess.

Some things make no sense such as cutting the chefs head off, as how would they know he was going to order an air strike. And how much film did the photographer have and why so many cameras, and would the film not have gone off in the heat if he was staying in the jungle, unless he was shooting with no film.

What was the point of going after Marlon Brando when he seemed to be too far away to be a problem.

Watch this as well. It will supplement “Apocolypse Now” if you’re a movie buff.

Doesn’t explain the motivations as much you might expect, but it definitely lets you see how fucked this whole project was. It bankrupted Coppola.

The books is also called “Hearts of Darkness”

                        Napalm,

I forgot what it was called.

For some reason I had anthrax in my head.

You would have thought I would have remembered Napalm, as I made some at school and burnt the chemistry lab down, and spent two years in a unit as they said I was mentally unstable.

                            it's actually pretty easy

for example the full URL for your vid is

                            Code:
                            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlyx_lPtcgQ
then you have two options, either click 'advanced' on post and select 'wrap [YOUTUBE] tags around selected text' or just do it yourself with this

[YOUTUBE] hlyx_lPtcgQ [/YOU TUBE] without the spaces

the yt vid code is that spiffy part after the 'v=' thing

not gonna comment on the rest of this thread cuz war is hell and I'm tired of people dying over nonsense on all 'sides'

let alone those profoundly damaged by the experience, mentally and physically

peace and love to all soldiers and fuck war

those Vietnam dudes...a great many didn't sign up

they just weren't in college or have a debilitating condition like bone spurs nor the resources to escape to Canada so literally had no choice

throwing molotav cocktails at the precinct

It wasn't a question. It's about perspective. I lost a few friends in that war. Everyone, back then, was subject to an involuntary draft into the military. We were acutely aware that we were fodder for an illegal, undeclared war by proxy with the Soviet Union. That film captured the war precisely for what it was, immoral imperialism. In other words, a war for profit only. Our government didn't give a shit about Viet Nam, and it didn't give a shit about its children.

Those soldiers, really just high school kids, were getting killed for nothing, absolutely nothing. 50,000 of them. So it's not just a movie to my generation; it was our reality. Everyone, back then, was subject to an involuntary draft into the military. This movie illustrated how bazaar the times were for us.

To some, it's just a movie they cannot relate to.

Apocalypse Now is in my Top 3 Films ever personal list

The best scene? Kurtz's monologue about the VietCong hacking off kids' arms. Very disturbing but also very deep and resonates widely across history and geography.

The film was based on Polish American author Joseph Conrad's classic HEART OF DARKNESS - the spiritual and geopolitical implications remain with us today
