i been playing on an acoustic, reading tablature, for about 3 or 4 years, but i was recently at a mutual friends and some people were jamming out on guitars, I picked one up and played some of the songs I know and I was surprised how awesome they sound on an electric

Can't really go wrong with a Fender Strat. They cover a wide spectrum of music. The Made In Mexico ones are usually just as good (but check them first). If you want to go a little higher, get the USA made Texas Special Strat (or Lone Star as they used to be called). It's got a "splitable" Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates humbucker in the bridge position and two single coils. You can play almost any style with that one.

You're kidding. You need long, fast fingers for playing bass.. Guitarist's use a plec for strumming and playing chords.. that hardly take advantages of finger speed

It all depends on the tone you're trying to achieve.

Deep, dark tone: Gibson Les Paul
Glassy: Fender Stratocaster
Twangy and a bit dirty (think Brown Sugar): Fender Telecaster
Fat with mid-range: Gibson SG

Of course, your amp is an even bigger part of the equation...

squier is quite good for beginners though

If you are playing now already, do yourself a favor and get a Fender Stratocaster.

American made is the way to go, the quality is very very high and its a guitar that you can growth with for years. I have owned my stratocaster since 1995. Countless jams, gigs and recording and its always been rock solid.

Hendrix, Clapton, SRV, Eric Johnson, Jeff Beck and Herb Kornfield among many others play one. Shouldnt that speak for itself?

i started out on a piece of shit $99 acoustic. i jammed on that shit... then got a lil better $150 electric...

doesn't matter what ya get really when you're jus startin out.

but, if you want to be a michael angelo fastest guitar player in the world you'll need somethin higher up ;)

For a first electric, both the epiphone (by gibson) and the squire (by fender) are probably your best bet. Go to a guitar store and play both and see which you like better.

Gibson's usually have double coil (or humbucker) pickups which are better for a thicker, warmer tone. Fenders have single coil pickups which are better for a cleaner, more twangy sound.

So, it depends on what type of music you enjoy playing. If you like thick distortion metal type stuff. The humbuckers will be better. If you like blusey or classic rock type stuff, the single coils are better.

But they are both good guitars for the money.

I love Fenders, I've been a Strat fan for years. But if you are looking at getting a cheapie Fender, get the Squire Telecaster instead of the Squire Strat- those cheap whammy bars aren't worth a crap & you'll be out of tune all of the time.

And don't forget- no matter what guitar you play, it will only sound as good as the amp you are playing it through!

Just my

I've bought and sold several guitars on eBay without problem - great deals too. You just need to research and find out what you want. Then, get it from someone with great feedback only and never purchase one without the hardshell case. A lot of actual guitar shops sell extra inventory on eBay at quite a discount.

Fenders suck balls all around. The strat is an awful axe. The tele has a unique sound but also sucks balls to play.

If you want a good axe, get a Paul Reed Smith. If you want a lot cheaper, get an Ibanez. The wizard 2 neck is the single fastest neck I have ever played, and it comes on their $350-$700 guitars. Ibanezes sound like shite but they play really fast.

Nothing is good for $200, but you could do decent for like $400-$500. I have to warn you and pay attention to this. If you get a tremelo based guitar, unless you know EXACTLY what you want, ONLY GET A FLOYD ROSE LOCKING TREMOLO. They make many models, the really cheap ones suck. Make sure that you get a good tremolo. Otherwise your guitar will constantly be out of tune no matter what you do and how often you tune. Also the sustain and tone won't be as good.

I've recently become a snob and am now getting my guitars custom built with my own specs. I have one coming that of course has the wizard neck but is made of real woods and has Duncans and a floyd. Can't wait to see it.

Yeah, I can tell you're a snob.

PRS's are way overpriced pieces glorified by virtually every nu-metal band. Anything from Ibanez (or Ibeenhad) under $500 is a piece of junk. I wouldn't touch anything from them except maybe a Jem or RGT3120.

Fender trems with locking tuners or an LSR rolling nut stay in tune just fine. G&L also makes a superior dual-fulcrum tremolo that stays in tune.

Floyd Rose only makes high end stuff, the rest are licenses. They are a pain to change strings, intonate, and use alternate tunings. Most pros block their Floyd's anyway. I've got a few on my USA Jacksons, but prefer string-thru, stop tail or vintage trems.

Seymour Duncans are great pickups. Maybe that's why they put them on several Fender Strat models. My favorites are the TB-4 and 59.

I have an Ibanez 570 I bought in college like 12 years ago. It sounds like ass, but plays like lightning. Also never goes out of tune. I dropped in a DiMarzio Fred in 1992 I think and it sounds a little better but still nothing great. It does have a great glassy clean tone on the middle/neck combo.

I don't think they're more than 500 new and I'd buy another if I needed a cheap axe.

And the PRS's are expensive, and I hate the new neck joint block they're using. That's why I get mine custom made, I get what I want for less than a PRS.

get a stratocaster. i like the mexican ones the best, the bridge on the american std. is funky. or ibanez is always a good company. i had an rg470 a couple years back that was nice. but for all around playability and sound the fender stratocaster is the premier guitar. if you got 2 grand to through look at buying vintage

get Jackson! Performer series is around $400, you can a Jackson for $500 with EMG pickups which is good enough for playing at home, on small stages, demo recording etc. It's definitely the best brand at $400-500. If you want to spend more money, you can get ESP but you have to choose carefully, not all of them sound good, many of them have shitty bridges.

I'd have to agree with Virtu Mike opn this one because I play a PRS

However if you are starting out- it would help you to purchase an acoustic

It's all about conditioning your fingers- once you make the transition from acoustic to electric your fingers will feel like butter as they glide over the gauge of electric strings

Just my two cents

Or you can buy a cheapy Fender Squier to learn on for around $150

If you are spending less than 200 bucks for an electric guitar it won't matter what you buy. I would suggest a used "better" guitar than a new one at 200. Find any brand that feels good to you and sounds half way decent. I am a les paul man for 6 string and a spector man for my main bass. I also have a carvin bass that I used live for years but I broke the truss rod. Other than that is was a killer bass.

I play an Ibanez that I've had since I was about 13, and still love it.
