Don't expect it to change anytime soon. The Fed is printing money like mad. More dollars less value.

In the long run their thinking is that it will strengthen the US Economy because it will be easier to sell US Goods with a weaker dollar and hard to sell imported good with a higher Euro, Yen, etc...

Kind of a nasty approach, but if it works it will be good for the US Economy.

Sitting here in Australia it looks even worse:
October 2001 I got: US$1000 ~ AUD1970 (at a rate of 0.507)!!!
This time last year: US$1000 ~ AUD1850 (at a rate of 0.54)
About 1/2 year ago: US$1000 ~ AUD1770 (at a rate of 0.565)
This year (currently): US$1000 ~ AUD1490 (at a rate of 0.67)

So for the same US$ I get roughly 25% less, then my ratios are down by about 50% compared to 2001 = overall my income is less than half of what it used to be in 2001

usd touches the bottom during the next month, goes down to around 0.8 eur
will start recovering slowly starting july and will stabilize at 0.9-0.95 eur at the end of the year
dollar and euro will be worth equally in sept-oct 2004, probably

so the best moment to cut up the agony ;-) and convert your usd savings to euros would be dec 2003 ? jan 2004

or best to keep usd and spend euros only if you have other sources of income

imho usa should haven?t allowed this kind of disaster
a half of century long unlimited trust in american currency went down the toilet in less than a half of a year

A little perspective.

Comparing the dollar's value to those of just the past 4 or 5 years says nothing about the long-term exchange rate of the dollar.

The dollar is where it was against the Euro four years ago, the Swiss Franc 4.5 years ago, and the Franc 7 years ago. Note all those dates were just a few years ago. None were 50 years ago.

The highest value for the dollar (US Dollar Index) from 1970 to the present was in the mid 1980's. We're not even near it and haven't been recently. The lowest value was in the early 1990s.
