I think gene therapy, from in utero to elderly adults is coming faster than most people think. I'm shocked there is not more general news about current progress. Like you have to read science news specifically to see any of this. A larger study recently sequenced 40 new pieces of genetic info related to HIV. I think we are very close to cures for everything from cancer to psoriasis. Whatever anyone thinks about this tech, humans always end up implementing tech that exists, so this is all coming. Of course, who has access to cures and who profits and whether Big Pharma fights cures ... well that's something else again.

I think it is unethical to preserve life in many cases.

Assuming life is being preserved with consent of the patient, like what?

Makes a great sci-fi novel but not so cool in real life maybe. They're going to do it though
