The Ukrainian servicemen who surrendered, defending the Zmeiny Island, were delivered to Sevastopol, Mikhail Yasnikov, deputy commander of the Black Sea Fleet for logistics, said, RIA Novosti reports .
“Today, a group of Ukrainian servicemen from Zmeiny Island in the amount of 82 people was delivered to Sevastopol on the Shakhtar rescue tug, who laid down their arms and decided to return to their families,” Yasnikov said.
According to him, after going through legal procedures and agreeing with the Ukrainian side, the servicemen will be sent home to Ukraine. The prisoners were provided with dry rations and bottled water.
Snake Island is located about 35 km from the coast of the Odessa region of Ukraine, it housed a garrison of Ukrainian border guards. On the night of February 26, the State Border Service of Ukraine announced that control over the island had been lost . Later, the Russian Ministry of Defense also announced the occupation of Zmeiny Island.
