I've never seen so many hardware failures!

Regardless of make, model or component... It just seems like today's crap is always breaking down.

These days I'm constantly backing up data whereas 10 years ago our stuff seemed to last
forever. It seems like the days where these machines could survive filthy offices and coffee
spills are over.

brands used to battle over quality, but the corporate suits took over everything and now they care about repurchase. avg counter top appliance has a 24-month life cycle. 1-2 years for electronics and phones. the suits took over this industry too with similar results. money over quality.

I agree. 2 ways to increase income. Increase sales or decrease costs. Once competitors are gone, the creators step down from leadership and the accountants step up.

Yep, noticed the same thing. Not to mention basic appliances from like 50 years ago running just fine. I went through 3 coffee grinders in 10 years and the one at mom's is made in the 70s, and works just fine.
I'm not even beginning to talk about computers and more complicated devices. It used to be about quality, but it makes no sense to sell hardware that lasts 20 years if you want the consumer to buy the new model 2 years down the road...

Are you buying like good, high quality power supplies? We aren't seeing much in terms of hardware failure at our office. A couple of drives, a couple of power supplies and maybe 1 motherboard over 10-11 years? It also extends the life of your hardware if you leave it on 24/7 because it prevents it from heating up/cooling down hundreds of times.

I'm viewing a 65 inch flat screen from 2010. Works great.

Yeah I always let my PC stuff run 24/7. If I remember correctly the crash always happens on boot up

In the last 25 years i have lost many a back up drive though

Same here, I work on a laptop tho with two additional screens and never turning off, but I keep all my important stuff on clouds and servers so I don't lose shit around (learned the lesson on the past mistakes)
