What he's talking about is there's not a single gene that makes someone black. What we call "black" is a collection of genes, that plenty of white people also share. It's a combination.

The whole idea of seperate races is false, it was just created so we could have racism. Because of where we evolved different genotypes are present, but we're all the same animal.

A black man has dark skin and eyes to protect him from the sun, a white man has more oil in his skin to protect him from the cold.

And the genes that have historically most important - skin color aren't even absolute genes. Some genes are either one or the other, like eye color. The genes that decide skin color are relative - you usually get a mixture of both parents rather then the same gene as one of them. Hair's the same way, your hair is usually somewhere in between your mothers and your fathers.

we share over 90% of the genetic code of a chimp. but, you dont see me swinging from trees and eating bananas all day.

even with an animal like a dolphin, i think its in the 70 percentile

blacks make up 10% of the population. they should be happ with 10% of the coaching jobs, right? there is a point with football though. a larger percentage of blacks play football and basketball than their populational ratio.

but like all of life, its about who you know. i dont think there are any black football team owners. if all the owners were black, im sure there would be a larger amount of black coaches.

It seems like I shouldn't have to point this out, but chimps aren't human. We're a different species. Black people and white people are both human. All primates aren't human, just us.

There are certain genes that decide our phenotype. Eyes, height, things that affect how we look (whithin the human race). The genes that keep us from being chimps have nothing to do with phenotype.

There's more than 1 gene of difference between me and the average black man. Also more than 1 gene of difference between you and I - although my family is pure Irish. My eyes are green, my skin is fish-belly white, but we still have different genes.

Everything about our physical being is gene-related, Pronebone. But that doesn't mean that our genes divide us up into easily distinguishable "races." "Race" is a social term, not a genetic one. Do you understand now?

Let's look at skin color. There used to be a way of dividing up the races as Caucasoid, Negroid, and Mongoloid. This parsing was based largely on skin color, but also on skull characteristics, hair texture, and so on. Unfortunately, it had big problems. For example, what to do with East Indians, who were clearly "Caucasoid" in just about every respect except skin color: They could be very dark. Australian aborigines were very dark-skinned also, but were also clearly not Negroid or Mongoloid, according to the prevailing racial definitions. So, they, too, were classified as Caucasoid with an asterisk.

So much for "white people" (caucasians) being white.

This is the myth of race: It can't be defined in any genetic way that ends up making much sense.

If you want to define races on dick size, go ahead, but you won't find many geneticists following your lead.

Well for a very long time black people weren't treated really well in the mainstream media. For example Elvis was hated by alot of people because he was acting and sounding like a black singer. Another good example would be Dorothy Dandridge.

Now there are plenty of black people in the entertainment industry, but still if all the actors in the movie are black - it's a black movie, but if all the actors are white it's just a movie.

Basically some black people like black entertainment and it's not everywhere like white entertainment, so they create a little niche. Just like The Lifetime awards would be just for women, it's not an attack on men, it's just that men are more catered to than women.

I wrote this thinking it was a legitimate question, if you were just trying to say "It's not fair, I'm oppressed, feel sorry for me because the black man is keepin' me down" please pretend I was rude and condescending.

Like Jill, I am truly colorblind, these award shows and contests do not bother me in the least, they are just an interesting observation.

Before, I was a quasi-intellectual-elitist-snob. I was sure all those that did not feel exactly as I did were fools and had no purpose.

I worked in a shop in one of the most visited malls in the United States. Therefore, folks from all walks of life sat in my stylist's chair.

I (through the intimate contact associated in my field) got to know people I would never have bothered with had I not had to.

What always amazed me was when these people told me their stories. When they voiced their opinions, I was always able to find common ground with them no matter how disparate our lifestyles were.

What has all this got to do with your topic?

I guess that what I want to convey to you is this:

Stop concentrating on what polarizes us as humans.

I can see from what you posted that you hope to live in a world that judges people by merits and not skin color.

I wish we lived in that world also. We do not.

My personal term for it is: site abuse. We (as humans) abuse our gift of site.

My personal advice to you is to try to look at every person you deal with from the auspices of their merits.

Stop trying to look at the ways we are different and try to look to our common humanity.

True. Latinos have all kinds of awards, but we didn't really do anything evil to them. I think it's more that they (the blacks and latinas) feel under-represented in the entertainment industry.

It's easy to say we're color-blind, and I know the best of us try to be - but imagine what it would be like if everywhere you looked you saw only black faces. If the only toys you had growing up were black, and every person that was considered beautiful on tv was black, and all the heros were black. It would be hard on a person, and I can't pretend to know what it's like.

But it's changing, black people can now be in movies and not play a servant or a criminal. I'm thinking that before long awards shows like these will disappear, not because they're unfair - because they'll become unnecessary.

You can't draw lines on issues like these. What is a race? Skin color? Mindset? Competition where everybody runs as fast as they can and tries to win? Who the fuck knows...it's all what you make of it. Everybody has good points they make..if you don't see that you're not looking very hard. But that doesn't mean any body is "more right" than the next person.

We've all got a lot to learn about everything in this world. We are just lucky enough to be part of the technology that's making this learning process possible.

So why can't we all just get along ;-) When you spend time on unconstructive bickering at places like these, you're not making very good use of your time. Relax, and take in some different views...it's all good.

Ok, Labret, we've got to the point here where we're just arguing for the sake of not being the one to give up. You know it as well as I do, I haven't felt any true seething hatred from you in the last couple posts, and I'm just trying to twist your words around everything you say. I even started doing it on this one, but wised up. We haven't really said anything in a while, we're just trying to find new ways to repeat ourselves.

The thing is - we can't even agree to disagree, we don't know shit about what the other believes (except that we each believe the other to be wrong) you jumped in on a conversation that I didn't even feel strongly about - and I jumped right back. To be honest I thought you were sweetjimmy at first. (the way you threw the name in there, it was a fair guess)

I'll come clean, I'm pretty damn left. Didn't use to be, I'm actually a registered republican. As time went on, my opinions changed. I'm not so far left as you let on, and I'm no where near a hippie - but most the things you think I think, I probably do think.
