how so? i've seen some moderately busy boards with phpBB.
it's "no charge" too, compared to vbulletin. i forget, there's a couple other "no charge" boards, i believe almost replicas of the vbulletin code but released freely heh. i can't remember their names right now. might look around for those..

Yet, not one person has given me facts and proof. Just "how many big boards use phpbb? None!" That isn't proof or any good evidence.

Its called free, and good advice. PHPBB2 is unsecure, bloated, inneficient, a total resource hog, slow, and it can't be reliably customized or modded (with the exception of skins). You need facts and proof? Go install PHPBB2 and go fuck yourself. ![]() |

Vbulletin = free hacks and easy to find help if you need it.

VBB is better because they have been around longer than almost any other board. Since they've been around so long they've been able to tweak the code and whatnot to make it faster and more secure than any other board.

GFY runs VB and is fairly slow, but that could be due to its Win2k platform (as I have heard, not sure if it's confirmed).

I use phpbb, and I wish I had vb instead. I just like vb's features. phpbb seems very limited in comparison.
But phpbb is really easy to set up and modify. |

It depends on your scale and how much of your server's resources you want to dedicate.
I help manage SFRedbook.com, a Northern California escort board with 20,000 members. It runs on an old hacked version of the PERL based DCForum cleanly and with a powerful dedicated server serving hundreds of thousands of pages a day. PHPbb is a good product, open source with a huge development community, but slightly slower. VBulletin is good. DCForum+, a PHP version of the classic forum, is good. With any PHP/MySQL product, speed and scalability depends on the install tweaks to the database. The problem with these PHP products are they're easily hacked. I like Gossamer Threads, PERL based/SQL. It is fast, robust and difficult to break. http://www.gossamer-threads.com
