Like most french people I've grown with Anime, it's been over present on all medias since the end of the 70s.
Anime is like "Comics Culture" : super wide. You can't sum it up in a few words since there's absolutely everything in it, from awesome to awefull.
There are some specificities to it, but not that much in reality... the "japanese specific references" are superficial... in reality is very accessible.
For example, there's a ton of fantastic Sci-Fi Anime, beautiful stories, extraordinary animations... but they're not really original...
In recent years netflix has released several excellent Animes, I can make recommendations based on what's available there? If you light MMA and fighting/action series, you should love BAKI and KENGAN ASHURA

It's basically a 'style' of animation, but not always just for kids like UK animation is.
We all know the 'Octopus in the pussy' kinda thing on 'adult' websites, but there's also a lot of crazy stories that are very much for adults...
Try 'High School DxD' on Netflix. That's weird, funny, very edgy, not for kids and will give you a good idea of why it can be poopular.Comment

Highschool DxD recommended by CurrentlySober is excellent.
In recent years, there's one anime that stands above the others, it's "Attack on Titan".
It's a scifi/steampunk thriller extremely well drawn and animated, with a captivating story that manages to be original... it's violent, dynamic, surprising, disturbing... totally world class!!!
And you don't have to "like anime" to like "Attack on Titan"... you need to like the type of things I've listed above, press play and get thrilled
